Afterward, Union forces occupied Harper’s Ferry and renamed it Fort Sumter after president Abraham Lincoln’s flagship ship of that name moored there during his time as Commander-in-Chief of the Union Armies. From then until 1865,Fort Sumter remained an important military post in Jackson because it housed siege cannons that could be used to bombard Confederate positions inside Charleston Harbor. Aftermath of Civil War: In 1865, following the end of the Civil War, both Union and Confederate forces left Charleston Harbor and most all vestiges of battle were removed from this strategically significant location within months.)
