When the United States First Infantry Regiment was organized on November 15th, 1847, its members were given gifts of rifles and pistols by their colonel. The regiment was then renamed the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment on December 8th of that year. On July 10th, 1849, a company of soldiers from Jackson donated ten rifles to the 7th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment which was fighting in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. On October 6th of that same year, three companies of soldiers from Jackson donated two pistols each to the 9th Wisconsin Volunteers Militia Regiment which was also fighting in Mexico. On November 1st of 1851, Colonel James Wigfall ordered all units in Jackson to receive guns and ammunition for use in Indian Wars taking place throughout Oregon Territory. This order extended to any soldier within twelve miles of Fort Harrison at Prairie du Chien. Army gift history continued through 1861 when General David Hunter organized artillery batteries under his command at Fort Harrison and ordered all troops within twelve miles of Harrison (Fort Dodge included) to receive guns and ammunition. Army gift history ended with General John Custer's Expedition into Kansas City on August 16th 1863 when most all infantry and artillery assets were surrendered by Union forces without a fight or loot taken. The first post office established in Jackson was located at what is now called State Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue on October 25th, 1855; it served as a dropoff point for goods coming upriver from Michigan City (then known as Shawnee Mission). The first store opened on North Main Street near Court House Square on December 12th 1860; it operated as a grocery store until 1862 when it became an army depot where army goods such as clothing could be stored while being transported downriver to points eastward. Jackson had its own hospital founded on February 21st 1865 by Brigadier General JF Bemis with an initial population Of seventy-six patients; it grew rapidly thanks to donations from residents along with subscriptions received from military personnel stationed abroad including Austerlitz Fortress garrison in Hungary who provided medical supplies necessary forthe Western Theater Campaign against Ulysses S Grant’s Confederate Forces led by Robert E Lee

Jackson is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 362 at the 2010 census, down from 498 at the 2000 census. The city is located on the Eastern edge of Detroit metropolitan area, and its boundaries are largely based on Ford Road and I-275. The first Europeans to see what is now Jackson were French traders traveling along the lower Great Lakes in 1689–1690. They named it "Port de la Hague." In 1701, General Marquette explored the area and named it "New France" after his patron saint, François Chartier de la Vallière (1645–1715). It took until 1763 for Canadian fur trader John Jacob Astor to establish an Ferry Landing here that would become one of America's major ports serving both Canada and Europe. In 1807, with war raging between Great Britain and Napoleonic France over control of Upper Canada, President James K. Polk ordered Major General Stephen Hurlbut to take command of all American forces east of Lake Erie as part of his effort to contain British expansionist tendencies. On July 10, 1807—four days after Napoleon had been defeated at Waterloo—Hurlbut's column crossed into southern Michigan fromCanadian territory near Sault Ste Marie and began march upriver towards Jackson. Approaching Lansing on October 7th they camped for two nights beside Shiawassee River before continuing their march northward through Battle Creek National Forest on October 11th where they met a party led by Captain David Thomson who reported finding good land for settlement downriver near present day Van Wert Township in Washtenaw County; this news excited Hurlbut so much that he decided to move forward without further delay On November 3rd while encamped in Battle Creek National Forest ahead of reaching Mackinac City they received word that a party led by militia captain Lewis Cass had discovered goldfields south of Mackinac Island; this news caused excitement among Hurlbut’s men who became convinced that they were about to discover their long lost empire He set out northeastward with his entire force under orders not to stop foraging or prospecting but rather just search for new land if possible since he knew there could be no profitable mining investment in what was then an inhospitable region They continued marching northeast until arriving at a small stream called Steele’s Fork on November 14th whereupon halting due noon because “the weather looked unfavorable” he water sipped from some sources before continuing upstream where he encountered Indians: “We soon perceived them coming up behind us like vultures upon our spoil; we did not fire but lay still till they came quite close enough for us to see their faces” The next morning when another Indian group was sighted across Steele’s Fork again Hurlbut ordered all his troops frontal assault using artillery only “to let them know we meant business” resulting in several scalps being taken before finally succeeding in crossing over onto Indian property after hourslong engagement which ended with 20 killed/30 wounded including 5 Americans Unknown To History Jackson started off as just another small community founded by farmers around 1800 AD when people walked or rode Old Ford road east from Grand Rapids (now Ann Arbor) across open prairies watered by creeks and rivers into today's MI suburbs such as Oak Park & Highland Park
