Ionia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ionia County. The population was 11,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Ionia County was made by fur traders on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1807. The community was called "Hudson" because it lay on the Hudson River between Detroit and Grand Rapids. In 1837, a group of Methodist missionaries founded a mission school in what is now Ionia Township, named for John Hudsons Creek Settlement on Hudson Bay near present-day Ottawa Township. In 1847, Ionia became an incorporated village under State law as one result of a push by Territorial Governor James Kneagle to encourage settlement around Mackinac Island due to its potential as a shipping point for goods from Detroit and other cities along Lake Huron. By 1850, there were over 200 residents living in Ionia when it became an unincorporated village again under State law that year due to lack of farmland within its boundaries available for settlement. The discovery of oil resources at nearby Well No. 9 in 1908 led to increased development around Well No 2 and subsequent wells throughout southern Michigan which led to declines in population and economic activity beginning in 1915; however, some new businesses began up until that time such as lumberyards and restaurants soon replaced traditional industry closures during Prohibition era days when alcohol was not allowed vendibly without prior purchase from local stores/bars/distilleries etc.). Ionia, Michigan history begins with the early 1800s when the area was part of the Huron Indian Territory. The first white settlers in Ionia were Andrew McNaught and his family who arrived in 1815. They set up a cabin on the banks of the Maumee River. The town began to form around this cabin, and it was called "Natchez" after Nathaniel Chase, one of the original white settlers in Ionia. In 1835, John Slemons settled in Ionia and started a small grocery store. In 1837, he built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. This became known as Slemonsville because it was originally used as a storage building for groceries. After John Slemons died in 1859, his wife constructed another log cabin next door to their first house which still stands today. This became known as Mrs. Slemonsville because she operated the store from this location until her death in 1903. In 1868, William Prentice moved to Ionia from Battle Creek and started an academy which would become one of the most successful businesses in Ionia history. In 1896, Prentice erected a large frame schoolhouse which remains standing today and is still used for school purposes today! In 1937, Prentice donated his entire estate to the town for use as a public library! In 1951-1952, Ionia received its downtown development grant which allowed for many new businesses to open up downtown including The Grosse Pointe News Company (later J&J Newspapers), Fleming's Department Store (later Fidelity Investments), and numerous others! Throughout its history, Ionia has been an important community with many contributing factors such as its status as an agricultural center due to its fertile soils; its position at the crossroads of several transportation routes; its close proximity to other towns; and finally its solidification into a residential community due to Its high population density during prohibition years! Today, Ionia is home to over 100 residents who participate actively in local government affairs through various committees and organizations!
Ionia was a small, rural community in the far east side of Michigan. It was founded by farmers and lumbermen in 1852. The population peaked at around 350 in the 1920s, but declined to about 100 by 1940. Ionia is now a ghost town, with few remaining residents.
