It is part of the Hillsburg-Warren Township government union and is within the Grand Rapids–Harrison County metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Ionia was John Toombs in 1836. In 1851, Ionia had a post office and three stores. A schoolhouse was built in 1857 and used until 1897 when it burned down. A new school building was built in 1911 and still uses that name to this day. Ionia, Michigan is a small city located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. Ionia is the county seat of Ionia County. It is one of fifteen villages in the town of Muskegon Heights. The village has a school and two stores. The first people to live in what is now Ionia were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and fruits near present day Muskegon Heights. In 1836, merchants Joseph Weis and Jacob Hays founded the first post office in what became Ionia Township. They named their company "Weislaus". In 1837, General Anthony Wayne fought his last battle at Fallen Timbers Creek while commanding Expedition No. 6 northwest of Detroit under Colonel Lewis Cass, where he was fatally wounded by Indian chief Tecumseh's Shawnee soldiers on July 12th. In 1843, fur trader Cuthbert Howe established an outfit known as Northern Fur Company on land that later became part of Muskegon Heights Village development including sections 6, 10 and 11 east of Third Street between Clinton Avenue and Harrison Road (now Lincoln Way). On November 1st 1840, voters approved a $25 donation from Drury & Dearborn Hardware Store owner Jacob Dearborn to build a public school for students in Muskegon Heights Village Schools District No. 2 which opened for instruction on September 20th 1841 with seventeen students in grades 1-4Ainderlin School District #2 had been organized December 15th 1840 by Reverend John Anderlin as a continuation of GradeschoolDistrict #1 organized December 3rd 1839 by Reverend Abel White within School District #1 &School District #2 then consolidated into SchoolDistrictNo.#2 on January 1st 1841 when all six schools were merged into one school district with Mr./ Mrs./ Miss Anderlin teaching grades K-8 together with Middle Preceptor Elijah Cook As Superintendent/ Director
