Ionia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Isabella County. The population was 5,663 at the 2010 census. Ionia is part of the Grand Rapids–Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to Eastern Michigan University, which has a total enrollment of nearly 43,000 students and is one of the largest NCAA Division I schools in Mid-America. The first settlers to what would become Ionia were farmers who came from eastern Pennsylvania in 1827 and1828. In 1835, James Fenton set up a sawmill on the river near present-day downtown Ionia while he traveled through the area looking for land to purchase. In 1839, John Hays established a gristmill on Big Run Creek just south of present day Main Street in what would become downtown Ionia. In 1847, German immigrant Johann Kapp founded Kapp's grocery store on Lafayette Boulevard northeast of downtown Ionia after leaving his farm near Bethlehem, PA.. The store became an important landmark for many years until it closed in 1978 due to financial difficulties brought about by changes in local trade patterns and competition from larger stores across town. Ionia is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the lower Peninsula of the Upper Great Lakes region. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of Saginaw County and is the county seat of Ionia Township. The first permanent residents in what would become Ionia were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1795 from Quebec City, Canada. They built Fort Mackinac on the site of present-day Ionia in 1802 to protect their fur trade interests along the St. Clair River corridor from Indian attacks. In 1814, as part of War OF 1812, Ionia was taken by General Anthony Wayne during his Invasion Of Upper Michigan Campaign against Native American forces led by Chief Tecumseh·Harrison Dodge and other area leaders. In 1824, James Worthy purchased land comprising present-day Ionia Township from Sir David Wilson for $1 million (at that time a very large sum). Worthy named his new township after him – James Worthy Township – because he had been instrumental in helping to found Detroit while serving as its first mayor and then postmaster general under President Washington’s administration. The town began to grow rapidly due to migration by farmers and workers seeking opportunities for agriculture near what would becomeDetroit; construction of railroads brought more traffic and industry into town beginning in 1834; and local businesses became involved in manufacturing such as flour milling and glass blowing before World War II finished off those industries which pulled away most drastically during that time period caused by competition from abroad with cheap labor available over there.)
