Ionia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ionia County. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ionia is located on the "Ionia River" which flows through much of central Michigan and drains into Lake Huron north of Mackinac Island. The area that would become Ionia was first settled by French traders in 1796 as La Salle's Landing, after François Laval, Sieur de la Salle's brother-in-law and an American War veteran who had accompanied Laval on his survey mission to Howell Territory in 1789. The landing site became known as Ionia because General James Wilkinson named it for John Prentice, 1st Baron Dufferin (1731-1812), one of his subordinates during the Northwest Company's military expedition against British forces near modern day Flint in 1801. In 1807, Ionia voted to secede from Monroe Township and form its own government under Governor George Washington Stebbins with a population of only 100 people due to low land value and lack of transportation options available at that time; this action helped spur development around what would become downtown Ionia today including present day Woodward Avenue between Main Street and Clinton Road NW. Ionia is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a post office in 1871, and became an incorporated village in 1902. Ionia's rich history can be found from its founding to its current day. The town was mentioned in Tecumseh's Treaty of 1806, which ceded land east of Ionia to Canada; and it played a significant role during the American Civil War with veterans flocking to Ionia for military service. In 1865, General George Crockett stored munitions on Long Island Sound while war preparations were under way; local residents helped towboats filled with munitions upriver to avoid enemy recognition. Ionia lost much of its prominence during World War II as many families moved away or were killed during the war effort. However, the town has experienced some resurgence over the past few decades due to new businesses and projects being developed there such as a soccer stadium and golf course that have attracted settlers back into town.
Ionia was founded by John F. Kennedy in 1881 as a trading post on the Ionia River. It became an incorporated city in 1916. The city's first mayor was J.B. McNamara and its first City Council was made up of seven residents, three men and five women. In 1951, Ionia established itself as a college town when Michigan State University moved from Detroit to Ionia. The university is still headquartered there today and has expanded its campus to over 95 acres (40 hectares).
