Ionia, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ionia County. The population was 8,715 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th-largest city in Michigan and the 11th-largest city in United States as of 2015. It is also home to Ionia College, one of four colleges in Muskegon County. The first permanent settler in what is now Ionia County was James Crain, who arrived on July 12, 1809 with his family from New York City. In 1817, he founded Crain's Landing on Negaunee River which became a commercial center for the area until 1800 when Detroit took over that role. In 1824, George Washington Carver founded White Sands Plantation near modern day Ionia Heights after purchasing land from David Ritchie. Carver was an early promoter of agricultural settlement in central Michigan and developed what is now Ionia Heights into a thriving community with several mills and grocery stores along Negaunee River during his time as president of Belle Plaine Township (now Cadillac) Township (now Monroe) County (then part of Ottawa County). The first post office in what is now Ionia County was established on March 7, 1830 by General John Lappin with letters received from Chicago.[1] The first store opened at White Sands Plantation on December 16, 1830 by J Pollock & Co., a company founded by Carver to provide goods to settlers arriving via the Mackinac Bridge across Lake Huron into Upper Canada[2]. On October 21, 1840,[3] General John Denny erected a small wooden frame courthouse on lands purchased from Ritchie near present day downtown Ionia Heights. That same year saw another milestone when Colonel Nathaniel Lyon arrived with his forces invading southern Ontario during the Mexican–American War[4]. This event led to increased competition for land between American farmers and Mexicans living throughout Central America – including those living within what would become Eaton Rapids Township (now Muskegon Heights).[5] In 1847,[6] James Wirtz purchased 1/4 mile (.50 km) east of White Sands Plantation where he built Wirtzville Station which served as an important stop for travelers travelling through or passing through central Michigan en route to their various businesses northward along Negaunee River[7][8]. The first record of Ionia is from 1816 when it was a part of Monroe County. In 1824, it became a part of Washtenaw County. It became a part of Lapeer County in 1834 and then to Kent County in 1840. In 1861, Ionia become a part of Oakland County and in 1901 it became an independent municipality called Ionia Township. On May 12, 1903, Ionia Township adopted its current name which means "Island" in Greek because most people who lived there were refugees from other parts of the United States during the Panic Of 1907. In 1916, Ionia had two stores and one blacksmith shop open for business. The first post office was established at this location on October 7th by Wm Halsey with P C Green as First Mail Agent. By 1930 there were six churches with eleven schools in Ionia Township having an enrollment total over 1,000 students including both public and private schools through grades 6-12 inclusive (the number has since increased to seventeen). Some notable residents or figures include: Wm Halsey (1810-1892), George Stephenson (1787-1859), David Boyd (died 1865), John Prentice Macdonald (1847-1925), Augustus Kelley(1873-1955) and William Dyson(brought up here 1889).

He founded a log cabin on an island in the Lapeer River and named it Merrill Island after himself and his wife Anna Merrill. Later settlers included John Aiken (1839-1905), who built a white schoolhouse on present-day Main Street; Elisha Goodrich (1868-1948), who erected a large frame house on what is now First Avenue NW; and Everett Fenton (1885-1966), who settled near where he would later build his home, called "Fenton's Grove." In 1892, David Silliman bought land east of Main Street from John Aiken for $2 per acre ($ in current dollars). Silliman developed it into what became known as Ionia Township. In 1894, Ionia Township organized as a village under the direction of its first mayor, Elijah Hickson. In 1899 it adopted an ordinance to create its own government with five ward officers: one director of public works and Public Works Committee member; one assessor; one justice of peace; and seven trustees to manage township funds used for education, social welfare, law enforcement, fire protection, etc.) On January 1st 1907 the Village changed its name to Ionia when all other villages within Wayne County were given their new names following approval by Governor George Venn (D) during his administration. The village had originally been called East Lansing but due to objections from residents East Lansing was renamed after Ionia because that's where most people living around that time resided - including some still today living there! Mayor Hickson also ordered all churches within town limits to change their names too - including Our Lady Of Mount Carmel which continued to be known as "East Lansing" until 1924 when it reverted back to its original name - making national headlines! Today much evidence remains showing how significant this event really was - especially since many small towns throughout Michigan have kept their original names even though they've experienced turnover over time...including our own!
