The United States Air Force has a long and rich history in Ionia, Michigan. The USAF began its presence in the area in World War II, when the United States government leased land to establish an airbase. From that base, the USAF conducted operations during the war against Japan. After the war, Ionia became home to two Air Forces commands: NATO's Allied Tactical Air Command (ATAC) and US Air Forces Europe (USAFE). Inactivated in 1993, both commands were reactivated as part of Unified Combatant Commands under President George H.W. Bush in 1991. On Nov. 17, 1960, the Ionia-based Air Force Base Wing was activated as an air force gift to the town of Ionia. The wing was originally constituted on Dec. 12, 1959 when the Michigan Air National Guard's 141st Fighter Squadron activated at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas. The wing was redesignated as 111th Fighter Wing on Feb. 14, 1966 and it moved to its present location at Ionia AFB on Nov. 17, 1960 after being transferred from Randolph AFB in San Antonio. The wing has participated in numerous deployments throughout its history including Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Noble Eagle in 2002-2003.
Ionia, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,060 at the 2000 census. It is located in Houghton County. Ionia is part of the Kalamazoo-Grand Rapids-Harrison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by John Prentice and his wife Sarah Stephenson as a result of the Great Western Railroad's construction through that area. Prentice named it after Ionius, an ancient city in central Greece that he had seen on his travels as a young man. In 1881, Ionia became part of the United States when it became a territory of Michigan. In 1945, Ionia became a city and has grown rapidly since then with its location near Central Michigan University and other businesses within minutes' walking distance from most residents. Today, Ionia is home to many high school students who commute to Grand Rapids for universities or job opportunities; as well as people working in downtown Kalamazoo or elsewhere inKalamazoo County while also enjoying some rural relaxation here during their winters months (e.g., tubing at White Water National Recreation Area). There are also several villas/condos available for purchase or rent close to downtown which offer more than just living quarters but include agricultural land used for growing crops such as apples, grapes etc., giving rise to one common boast among locals: "We're not just farmers anymore!"

This project was led by scientists at plutonium production facility at Hanford in Washington State. After World War II ended, many Americans were interested in learning about aviation and its potential for war crimes or antisemitism (a problem that had been growing throughout Europe). So on July 17, 1947, Congress passed Public Law No: 97-539, which created the United States Air Forces Academy (USFA) as a school dedicated exclusively to training pilots and officers for flying missions in support of American interests worldwide*. USFA opened its doors on September 1st*, making it one of the first schools dedicated specifically to aviation.* By 1953*, USFA had become one of America's top educational institutions*!* *According To Air Force History Online*, "In 1948 [the academy] became fully accredited by both Congreases** [*congregations refers hereto Congress’s Joint Resolution 106-2], entitling it officially ‘the United States Air Force Academy School Of Aviation’."

Ionia was founded in 1837 by five farmers from the town of Westville, Michigan. The community was named for Ionia, a city in Greece that was then part of the Ottoman Empire. The first school in Ionia opened in 1839. In 1850, the town passed an ordinance establishing a public library. By 1865, Ionia had a population of 505 residents and two schools. That year, the town also passed an ordinance forbidding polygamy. In 1887, Ionia became a city and adopted its own municipal government. In 1913, the city council approved plans to build a waterworks to provide water to downtown Ionia and other areas of the community. Construction began on the works in 1915 and finished in 1917. The work cost $2 million and employed more than 1,000 people. The city built three churches – one Greek Orthodox, one Catholic, and one Protestant – as well as six schools (grades Pre-K through 12) and four health clinics between 1915 and 1917. A park was also constructed near downtown for use by citizens and visitors alike. The city experienced significant economic prosperity during World War II because of its role as a military base for First Army Corps located adjacent to it on Gratiot County Road No.. 21 north of downtown Ionia . After the war ended in 1945, the economy slowed due to low demand for military materiel or services provided by local businesses within Gratiot County; however, this did not impact Ionia's ability to maintain its status as a vibrant community with strong cultural ties throughoutnorthwest Michigan
