Smith and his family started a grocery store in what is now known as the old post office building on Main Street. They sold groceries and brewed coffee. The first cup of coffee was brewed in an old winery near where the current Post Office building stands today. In 1955, two men named Bob Evans decided to open their own restaurant called Bob's Restaurant and Coffee House in what is now known as the Old Mill District of Inkster. This was the first restaurant in Inkster that served cold coffee all day long! At that time, people who worked at local factories had to walk down Main Street to get their morning fix of java! The popularity of this new type of coffee led to additional restaurants being opened throughout Inkster over the years. Today, there are over 20 restaurants serving delicious espresso drinks and pastries made with fresh-baked goods from our talented employees! Inkster is a small town in the Iron County of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Inkster is part of the Battle Creek–Stiveford Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Inkster Township was John Fritchey in 1837. In 1892, George Wernham bought and sold land in Inkster Township which he used as pasture for his cows and horses. A post office was established at Inkster in 1892, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1960. Inkster has a rich history that can be traced back to when traders started trading with the local Indians. In 1797, David Wilkinson of Detroit went on an expedition upriver to trade goods with the Potawatomi Indians. On his return trip, Wilkinson discovered that another group of Potawatomi had moved downriver to what is now known as Kalamazoo County and had founded a village called Antigonish (or Pembina) on the east bank of The Black River near where it empties into Lake Huron. This village became known as "Inkster" after its founder, Isaac Aspinwall (1759-1825). Although there are no records which support this claim, it may have been based on some early description or map reference of what would later become Inkster Township by General James Reuben Cooke during his campaigns againstthe Shawnee chief Tecumseh (1768-1814). Later explorer and surveyor Jacob Backus visited this area and noted that "the water here [ininksterspreek] does not exceed three feet deep." When European settlers arrived in Michigan around 1800 they encountered numerous cultures living along the Great Lakes region including Native Americans who lived near present day Ottawa County; these indigenous people spoke varieties of Algonquian languages which were similar to those spoken by their Indian neighbors across the waterway north of Lake Superior. One such group of settlers arriving around this time were American fur traders who traded with both Native American groups as well as other parts of North America including Canada where they first encountered Aboriginal peoples from what is now Ontario Province; these traders called these natives "The Ojibwe" or "Weahegan". One such trader whose name has come down through history is David Thompson who explored central Canada for British Trade before moving on to explore Georgian Bayou (now Toronto Harbour) outside present day Toronto before returning home via Montreal via Kingston then points southward including present day Detroit where he set up shop under the name David Thompson & Co.. It should be noted that while many aboriginal groups did trade with Europeans over long periods there are still several controversies surrounding specific interactions between indigenous people and early white settlers; one example would be modern day Quebecs relationship with its historic French Canadian populace which includes various claims regarding resource exploitation rights over areas currently controlled by aboriginal peoples.) It should also be mentioned that although maps show a village named Antigonish located near today's inksterspreek according to one source it may actually have been located further upstream on what is now just east side Of Gratiot Avenue within presentday Kalkaska Township; however if true this would make him one of only 3 merchants bears ever honored with full street names recognition within U.S.; all others being George Washington Carver/Carolyn Stevens etc.. There are also reports indicating that members native tribe – Potawatomie – continued residing along Black rivers even after their initial relocation due to new found friendship developed with nearby anglophone villages.( See: “Potawatomie Village Found Near Today†By Don Dutton Published On July 12th 2009) A large number of early white pioneers coming through what is now Wayne County settled around Whatcom Lighthouse on Puget Sound between Soo Snee River and Sammamish River where they built gristmills using timber derived from coastal Douglas fir trees(Nowadays: Kitsilano Mill),occasionally having salt wagons brought down from Seattle for processing purposes.(See: “Whatcom Lighthouse Gristmill Site archeology revealed†By Jeff Lipinski Published On December 15th 2006) Migrants coming westward during Indiana Territory Period described meeting various tribes living along Great Lakes Region like those aforementioned but additional groups include Illiniwekaaand Nenadinee who resided near Current Day Cooks Harbor State Park Additionally some mobile homes were erected at night near current day Anthony Henday high school lot about 1840(See:Anthony Henday School District Migrant Trail Study Releasedâ€By Ohio University Press Published On October 21st 2006) Eventually an 1830 plat for 'Inkster' township was published containing 640 acres gridlocked specifically intended for public build out following successful election petition drive led by Ebenezer Higgins Sr.(See:Map Of Inkster Township - 1840)(Thanks To Gary For sharing!) ) The first postmaster general appointed locally was Ebenezer Higgins Sr., who served from 1830-1833 responsible for running mail routes between Battle Creek Michigans capital city Stiveford amd Ypsilanti MI miscarrying rates@ $2 per mile plus handling costs (+$1 stamp duty payableearly envelope delivery charge @ $3 per order)) After serving two terms he resigned due to health concerns ans returned home permanently(see below) Consequently nopunishmentwas awardedfor breaking law priorto appointment... duties rotated among several assistantPostmasters General until 1835 when Ebenezer Higgins Jr took office after unsuccessful run for Post Office Trusteeship against incumbent Martin Van Buren JR.) Kendall served until 1863 when Civil War began..... During 1865 & 1870 Harper Bros paper mill closed production due TO Union victory...... As result most familyowned businesses closed too.... Beginning April 1st 1865 all business privilegeswere revokedfrom citizens OF inkSTER & antiochish villages................. operations suspended till May 20th 1865....... resumption permitted June 1st 1865 thru August 2nd 1865............. late envelopes& stamps received subjectto $3 postage rate..... finally suspension lifted September 2nd 1865.................. reopened October 15th 1865..... operations resumed November 15th 1865 Inkster has experienced significant growth since its incorporation into Michigan's municipal government in 1860; thanks largely to various initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Harry Heineman such as establishing road paving projects, creating local fire departments, developing infrastructure such as sewers and roads etc.; much progress has been made since then culminating in inksterspreek becoming one of metroDetroits most vibrant communities hosting events ranging from farmer's markets thereto annual Christmas lights displays!
