Inkster's history dates back to 1836 when Charles Sennett founded a post office here. The name "Inkster" comes from an English word meaning "a place where you can write." The Village of Inkster was incorporated on November 2, 1951. In 1962, it became one of four villages within the Holland-Kalamazoo Combined Statistical Area (MSA). On July 1, 2006, Inkster amalgamated with the city of Holland to form a new MSA with a total population of over 60,000 people. The Village and City of Holland are home to several cultural attractions including Artspace Gallery and Theatre District; Calvin Moore Museum; and Fordson Park which features an Olympic-sized swimming pool and tennis court as well as public restrooms and a playground for children. Inkster also has its own school system - The Inkster School District - which operates four schools: Apple Valley Elementary School; kindergarten through 8th grade; Dutchtown Middle School; and high school - The Holland High School - which serves students from 9th through 12th grades.
