That ship was followed by USS Olympia on January 12, 1800. Commodore John Denny and his command of the 2nd Division of the 5th Fleet visited Holland on February 11, 1800 and brought gifts including cannons and other naval equipment to Queen Wilhelmina IV of Holland for her coronation that same day. The ships docked at Haarlem on March 25 and 26, 1800 before sailing back upriver to New York City on April 1st.
The United States Navy presence in the Netherlands increased during the War for Independence when Commodore Stephen Decatur sailed into Rotterdam harbor with a squadron of fourteen vessels on October 3rd, 1807. In addition to supplies and munitions, Decatur took possession of a number of Dutch vessels which he donated or sold to the Americans. This act helped increase American support for independence as well as protect American shipping interests in Europe during wartime times.
Following the war, Commodore John Denny returned home and resumed his duties with the US Constellation squadron off Long Island until he retired in 1821 after twenty years service with distinction. During World War II, Holland played an important role as an airfield for U-2s flown by American bombers during Operation Neptune's Spear, which led to Japan's surrender unconditionally on September 2, 1945. After the war, many businesses closed down or merged into larger ones while residents struggled with economic recession and increasing crime rates. However, Slowly but surely some improvements began to take place such as new schools and a resurgence in local economy that has seen growth ever since including several high-profile renovation projects such as restoration of Central Avenue (the original street name) into an up-to-date shopping district called "The Main Street Experience." Today Holland is still a vibrant community with strong ties to its past but also looking forward to future opportunities through cultural events like Summerfestivals (largest music festival outside Detroit), farmers markets throughout October/November each year along with annual Taste Of Holland (a food event featuring local cuisine from around Michigan).
The Holland, Michigan area was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the late 18th century. The town of Holland was founded in 1824 and became a post-office in 1828. It was named after John Holland, an American Revolutionary War officer and magnate who had donated land to the village. The current courthouse is built on part of this land. In 1830, a mill was erected here and operated until 1865. A second mill was built in 1907 and still operates today. Holland also served as a center for education until it closed its doors in 1984. The last school closed down when district consolidation merged with other districts in the area. Today, there are only a few scattered remnants of these early days left around town.
