In 1865, Dutchman Hendrik Maga opened a small coffee shop in Holland, Michigan. The first European-owned and operated coffee shop in the area. In 1887, Maga married his first wife and moved to Detroit, Michigan where he continued to operate his business until his death in 1949. His son took over the business after Maga's death. The store eventually closed in the early 1990s but was reopened as an Ethiopian restaurant by current owners in late 2014

It is part of the Muskegon Heights census-designated place. The first Europeans to visit Holland were French in 1608 and they named it "Holland" after their country of origin (France). The name had nothing to do with Hollandia – a location in North America that has been identified by some as being near modern day Holland, MI. In 1805, United States diplomat James K. Polk sent American traders to what is now Holland and purchased land from the native tribe known as the Ottawa for $1,500 In 1827 Henry Ford established a gristmill here that became one of the leading flour mills in America. The town took on its present form when it was incorporated as a township on December 11th, 1903. When Prohibition began in 1933 most of Michigan's liquor industry went out of business including that operated by Plymouth Motor Car Company which founded Holland Township Dairy there in 1935 as part of an effort to keep liquor out of reach for organized crime figures such as Al Capone and other bootlegging operations within Detroit and its suburbs. The plant closed down during World War II but reopened after Prohibition ended as an advertising agency called Hennepin Advertising Service Incorporated which continued service until 1971 when it merged with another company making ad campaigns for Ford products before closing its doors forever. When prohibition ended many people who could no longer produce alcohol migrated westward into Canada where drinking was still allowed although laws against interracial marriage were still extant

Holland, Michigan is a small village in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Holland was platted in 1837 by John Prentice and James Fenton. In 1892, Holland's post office was established as the first ZIP code in Muskegon County. It has been reported that Holland may have been founded by an early Native American group known as the Keweenaw tribe. There are no records of this groupexisting in either area until after European settlement began in what is now Muskegon County on May 4, 1795 by a party led by Captain George Mackenzie and Major James Watt (brother-in-law of Governor John Graves Simcoe). Dutch fur traders had also explored this area before contact with Europeans occurred. One theory suggests that the Keweenaw tribe may have come to live here because they were needed to help provision Fort Wayne during its construction following the Northwest Indiana Purchase Treaty of 1796 which gave Great Britain control over all of present-day Michigan and Indiana; however there is no direct evidence to support this claim. Holland became a part of Detroit Township on February 17, 1836, when it was organized from parts of Dearborn Heights Township and Yorkville Township. On November 3, 1850, it became one mile wide . On December 6th 1870 when it reached its current width it became a town incorporated under the name "Holland". On October 15, 1861, it became a city and on December 12, 1898 it merged with the neighboring town of Grosse Pointe to form the current City of Holland.
