Holland is a small town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Detroit River and is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north-northwest of Detroit. Holland was founded in 1824 as a part of Ottawa Township. In 1871, it became an incorporated village and later added to Wayne County. The Holland Mill burned down in 1916 but was rebuilt and still operates today as a working mill. In 1921, Holland organized its first civic election which resulted in the election of one resident as mayor and four other officials including two jailers. In 1925, Holland's first public library opened with $5,000 from local citizens. With development along both sides of the river beginning to take place in early 1927, there were calls for annexations from other towns on either side of the river; however, no annexation requests were ever filed until 1930 when Holland annexed part of neighboring Fort Rouge Township Holland experienced significant economic growth during World War II due to its proximity to military facilities located within driving distance from town
