Holland, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan that is located on the east side of the Peninsula Peninsula. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine Metropolitan Statistical Area and is within Grand Rapids’ city limits. The first settler in Holland was Nicholas Van Ness who arrived in 1824 from New York City. In 1830, he married Hannah Swartzendrucker and they founded a farm on what is now SW 1/2 Mile Road near present-day Holland High School. By 1835, there were about 20 families living in Hollandtown Township with a total population of 100+. In 1838, James Aiken settled in what is now SW corner First Street and Third Avenue NW (now SW corner First Street and NW 24th Street NW) and named it Aikenville after himself and his wife Anna (née Weller). He also founded Aiken Township which had a population of 50 by 1840. In 1847, John Lapp came to Holland from Ottawa County, Canada with his family to start a new life as farmers. He bought land along First Street NW betweenSW corner First Street and Third AvenueNW for $4 per acre ($60 total). When he died in 1850 without leaving any children behind him, his land passed to son Charles Lapp Jr.. His great grandson Charles Lapp III donated much of this land back to the township for development into Dutch Village which includes today's Holland high school campus as well as numerous other buildings including three churches – Episcopal Church (1849), Lutheran Church (1850), Catholic Church (1851). A period during which many large landowners like these created thriving villages began around this time when platting became easier due to increased wagon traffic through their areas - allowing people more easily connect with one another without having to walk miles downwind or go door-to-door!Dutch Village quickly sprang up around its central square with businesses such as grocery stores, blacksmiths etc., while smaller dwellings sprung up all around it housing artisans such as dressmakers / milliners etc., farmers among them! Holland, Michigan is a small town located in Sanilac County, Michigan. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Flint-Port Huron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a post office in 1837, and was named for Holland, New York. The first store in the town opened in 1839. In 1840, the first school was built in the town. In 1868, the first courthouse was built in the town. In 1912, Holland became a city and retains that status to this day. The towns rich history can be found starting with its founding by pioneer John Lamberton and his family on October 12th of that year. Lamberton had come from Holland Township in Shiawassee County to start a new life after being discharged from Fort Snelling during the American Civil War with only $5 left in his pocket and no home to return to. He started out planting corn and oats on land he owned northwest of present day Holland when an ice storm shut down his plants November 15th1837 which made him very lucky because he had stored up food for winter before arriving here May 2nd1837 JohnLamberton moved his family into their first home on Main Street today’s corner of Depot Road/Johnson Road where they lived until 1861 when they moved again 3 blocks north onto what is now State Route 231 (now US 131) where they operated a general store until 1865 when they bought property along what is now State Route 11 (now I-94) south of downtown Harrisonville On February 9th1868 while MrLamberton was attending court one evening there came into town hearing about 5 miles SW corner of Saginaw River mouth Wagon Wheel Mfg Co warehouse & postoffice wagon wheel drive lathe & sawmill & planer millinery shop owned by James Townsend who resided just east of current day intersection JFGoodrich Rd/State Route 231(now I-94)) WilliamDormer who also resided just east of current day intersection JFGoodrich Rd/State Route 231(now I-94) were also attendinng court as witnesses That night after supper MrLamernton went to business premises mentioned above saw wagon wheel drive machine tools Millinery Tools Sawmill Planer Shop& Warehouse Phone Booth Factory Built By James Townsend Feb 9th 1868 later known as Townsend Machine Works
