Highland Park is located in the central part of the county and lies on the southern border of Oakland County. The city is bordered to the south by Dearborn Heights and to the east by Royal Oak. The first settlers in Highland Park were George Washington Carver and his family who settled there in 1847. They were followed by Mr. & Mrs. Hickey who bought land from General John Polkinghorne in 1850-51. The land around present day Highland Park was sold off and developed over time into what it now consists of with a high degree of public input as required for planning purposes. In 1875, when Detroit's population swelled to over one million people, Highland Park's citizens voted to become their own municipality separate from Detroit with a charter dated November 7, 1875 which provided for an elected Board of Mayor & Commissioners who would manage all township functions including education ( municipal schools), fire protection, streetlights and building permits etc., plus common election districts for both Township residents and neighboring cities/townships within Wayne County (then Understanding Township). Highland Park is a municipality in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern edge of the Upper Peninsula. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census, down from 6,034 at the 2000 census. Highland Park is part of Metro Detroit. The town was named after Sir George Highland, 3rd Baronet (1792-1876), who donated land to the town and served as its first mayor. The original village site lay at what is now corner of Griggs and Washtenaw Streets in present-day Highland Park Township. In 1873, a post office called "Highland" was established in present-day Highland Park Township; it remained open until it was discontinued in 1875. In 1879, a new village site was purchased by John Dickenstall for $2,500 from David Dixon & Sons merchants near what is now Woodward Avenue and State Street in Metro Detroit. The site had been previously used by an Indian reserve that included parts of today's Oakland County and Macomb County. Dickenstall named his new village "Highland Park." The first settler to arrive in Highland Park was David Ainsworth on July 4, 1879; he erected a log cabin on current day Washtenaw Street. In 1886, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a track through what is now Highland Park Village and connected it with Dearborn Heights via West Side Road; this connection led to increased commercial development around Highland Park Village which reached its peak during World War II when many companies relocated their operations to nearby Dearborn Heights because of its strategic location between Detroit and Chicago due to easy access to both markets . However, following World War II there were declines in business activity around Highlands because competition from neighboring municipalities increased as suburban planning moved westward into undeveloped areas within Greater Detroit . In 1951, Wayne State University opened an engineering school on land adjacent to present day Old Main Campus which led to more businesses moving into Highlands ; however Business declined again following the establishment of Wayne State University South Campus which merged with Grand Valley State University in 1994 . By 1990 there were only one store remaining within Highlands while most businesses had closed or moved away due to economic changes throughout metropolitan Detroit . There has been recent redevelopment effort spearheaded by community groups including Friends of Highland Park since 2007 that has seen some mixed results such as construction of a park adjacent to Griggs Street connecting existing neighborhoods
Highland Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 28,442 at the 2010 census, making it the 12th-largest city in Michigan and the third-largest city in Oakland County. Highland Park is part of Metro Detroit Area. The first permanent settler in Highland Park was Isaac Chamberlain, who arrived on July 8, 1837, from Newark, New Jersey. He built a log cabin on what is now West First Street near Royal Road. In 1838, Wm Hite bought land adjacent to Chamberlain's cabin for $2 per acre (0.50 acres = $10). Hite organized a town meeting to petition for incorporation as Highland Park on October 10, 1838. The charter was granted on November 14 by Governor John Bigelow with approval from the Michigan General Assembly three days later. On December 12 of that year, voters passed a resolution requesting that the name "Highland Park" be given to the new town and appointed David Boren as its first mayor On January 1st1839 Highland Park became an incorporated village under Ira Talbot's leadership with a population of just over 100 people including 20 white menagerie employees who lived onsite at Queen Anne's Gardens which opened in 1840 as one of Detroit's leading pleasure gardens before becoming abandoned due to sanitary concerns about nearby Grosse Pointe Farms In 1849 Higher Ground Agricultural Company purchased Queen Anne's Gardens from Talbot for $2 million which made Highland Park an agricultural center with 3 miles (4 km) of roads running through it . That same year also saw construction begin on what would become Woodward Avenue . By 1865 all but 2 blocks north of Woodward had been built out when Eastern Railroad moved into downtown to take advantage of high traffic levels along Woodward . In 1870s businesses began moving away from downtown due to technological advances such as electric streetlights which made streets more straight and improved public transportation options
