Highland Park is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Rouge River. The population was 9,196 at the 2000 census. Highland Park is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom metropolitan area. The community was named after General Arthur Waite Highlanders who fought in the Mexican-American War and fought under General Zachary Taylor during that conflict and in combat against forces from Mexico City. The first settler in Highland Park was John Priney, who arrived in 1836 and built a cabin on what is now Day's Landing Road. In 1838, James Goodrich built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street. In 1855, three men - Elijah Hicks, David Law and George Winton - organized the first Methodist church in Highland Park with services being held at two different cabins until a brick church was erected on Round Lake Road in 1860. The first Post Office was established in 1865 and continued to be called Highland Park until it was renamed Grand Rapids in 1898. In 1870, Sir John Atherton purchased land east of present-day Elm Street for development into what would become known as Highland Park Township which consisted of tracts of land that were eventually divided into blocks/blocks (or squares) for development purposes according to acreage rather than by family name or military service affiliation like present day Highland Park does today. There are still many properties within township boundaries that remain undeveloped today but this served as an important genesis for later subdivisions such as Westland Hills, Northvale and Stonington Heights which exist today primarily because of developments within township boundaries since then! In 1871 when section 12 – currently bounded by Griggs Avenue N., Hellmuth Ave., Jansen Dr., Livingston Dr., Erie Rd./Holland Rd./Southgate Rd./Buffalo Rd./Lutheran Blvd./Washington Ave.–was annexed to existing Township limits it became known as "East Side" Highlands park while section 3 – bounded by Holland Rd./Buffalo Rd.–became "West Side" Highlands park although both parks are technically considered part of same municipality even though they may have been pronounced differently at times! Until recently there were no school districts within Highland Park Township; children always went to either Grand Rapids public schools or Fraser Central School Districts outside their neighborhoods until 1971 when Southwestern Elementary School opened inside Howell Intermediate High School (now Renaissance Academy) making it possible for kids living near Howell Junior Senior High School (now Southwestern Middle School), Howell Senior High School (now Renaissance Academy) and other high school students living close together to get some type of educational opportunities not available from their homes!!! Though there are several private schools located within our town limits these days we continue to rely heavily upon public education so that our kids can grow up knowing about democracy &US Constitution etc…This system has worked pretty well so far with only one exception which we’ll mention momentarily ;) . According to the 2000 United States Census report, 8% of residents identified as Hispanic or Latino while 16% identified themselves as White European American including those identifying as Black American or African American while 82% identify themselves simply as “Upper Michigan natives”! Of note this number also includes over 100 individuals who self-identified as Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander! This diversity makes for interesting reading when comparing census results with social media demographics where most people seem comfortable labeling themselves just “Upper Michigan natives” whenever questioned about their ethnicity despite significant divisions among those groups across Michiganders ! As mentioned earlier one major difference between current day Highlands Park and its predecessor East Side Highlands park is that East Side had schools closer together making it easier for upper middle classkids growing up hereto learn how society works & read US Constitution etc… whereas present day HighlandsPark lacks any contiguous elementary/middle/high school districts meaning that upper middle classkids attending various private schools have quite an uphill battle getting educated here unlike back when ELP did much more OF THIS sort OF thing ;) .

The first Europeans to visit Highland Park were French in the late 17th century. The name of the town was derived from a stream called Highland, which ran through it. In 1812, General Harrison moved his headquarters from Detroit to this village, and ordered General Anthony Wayne to build a military hospital here. The residents of Highland Park helped finance this project. Also in 1812, the first school in the village was built by Rev. John Sibley and Mrs. Esther Ladd. In 1816, a church was dedicated here by Bishop Augustus Herrick and Reverend James McGowan. From then on, the town grew rapidly with many new homes being erected along Shinnecock Avenue and other major streets. In 1824, Drury Lane School opened in Highland Park after years of effort by parents and teachers alike. It would be one of the most important schools in the town until it closed its doors in 1919 due to financial difficulties. In 1830, Highland Park had over 100 inhabitants; but within 10 years that number had decreased to only 50-60 people due to waves of immigration into Michigan during that time-a sign that industrialization had begun to take hold across America During prohibition times (1910- 1920), many businesses located near Shinnecock Avenue became illicit dens for speakeasies and other illegal activities; as a result, much of what is nowShinnecock Ave was once used for agricultural purposes during these years After World War II ended, many factories were vacated or shut down as American industry underwent an enormous transformation; however, some companies such as Ford Motor Company continued operations until 1970s The population increased again slowly throughout the 1990s as high-paying jobs arrived at nearby campuses such as Midwestern University; but since 2000 there has been little growth in either housing or employment
