Highland Park is a small village in the Highland County, Michigan Department of Natural Resources area. The population was 1,741 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Fulton metropolitan area. A post office has been in Highland Park since 1871. The first store in Highland Park was built by Augustus Beans and his son-in-law John Neely on Main Street in 1865. In 1876, the town had a school and two stores. A church was built in 1915 and another one was added in 1923. In 1930, the village had a public library and three stores. In 1939, it had five stores and a schoolbus stop for students from nearby Ellington Elementary School. One store closed in 1951 but reopened as an auto parts store that year until it closed again in 1959; then it became an ice cream shop until 1985 when it closed its doors for good permanently due to lack of customership; however, it reopened as an art gallery after being abandoned for several years before finally closing again in 2006). In 1984, Highland Park also had its first fire department which served all of the villages within its borders except Ellington which kept their own department until 1988 when they merged into the Grand Rapids Fire Department effective January 1st that year with all other departments within Grand Rapids following suit on that date; this merger created what is now known as "Grand Rapids Community Services District" or GCSD which provides services such as ambulance service and streetlights to most villages within its jurisdiction regardless of whether they have their own fire department or not (although Ellington has retained their own police force).
