Highland Park is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is part of the Ann Arbor metropolitan area. The population was 14,693 at the 2010 census, making it one of the most densely populated towns in Michigan. Highland Park is located on floweree Road and Chenault Avenue, just south of Saginaw Township on the eastern edge of Metro Detroit. The first recorded inhabitants were Native Americans who hunted game in what is now Highland Park. At one time, parts of present-day Highland Park were part of what was known as Alpena County - until 1824 when it became Livingston County due to political changes in that territory. In 1836, much of what is now Highland Park was organized as a township within Saginaw Township. The name came from a nearby ridge called "Highland" which had been given to local residents by General David Dixon during his 16 days surveying for a road connecting Washtenaw County with Detroit in 1835 (). In 1868, when Wayne County was established, much of what is now Highland Park became part of it including Chenault Avenue and most importantly, flowseree Road which ran northwest-southeast through town center between Chenault Avenue and Woodward Avenue (then State Route 231). With its main artery open to traffic through central downtown and access to other parts of metro Detroit via Woodward Ave., flowseree quickly gained an reputation as one of the most important streets in town – second only to Woodward Ave.– as well as being home to many businesses and residences associated with those activities such as banks or shopping malls like Dearborn Center or Auburn Hills Mall.). In recent years there have been several attempts by developers interested in transforming flowseree into something more commercial or residential focused but all have failed citing resident opposition thereto such as concerns about increased vehicular traffic (due primarily to its location) along with potential negative effects on character and image associated with some key parcels such as Chenault/Flowseree Rd./Woodward Ave.. Highland Park is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern edge of the Upper Peninsula. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,702. Highland Park was founded in 1892 and named for Sir John A. Highland, 3rd Baronet of Largs Castle in Scotland. The first settler in what is now Highland Park was Alexander McLeod who arrived in 1827 from Caledonia, Ontario with his family. In 1839, he married Jane Fraser and they started a farmstead which would grow to encompass over 2 square miles (5 km2). The area around present-day Highland Park began to be developed as a center for trade and commerce during the late 19th century when railroad construction reached the area. During World War I, many residents served in the United States Army or Navy and some were killed during combat or while helping their country become wartime allies like Great Britain and France. Some residents also left their homes to serve within Greater Detroit Area communities such as Dearborn Heights or Inkster Township after being discharged from military service at homecomings ceremonies at Fort Wayne Shipbuilding & Drydock Company on May 1st 1918 In 1925, Drury & Sons ice cream parlor opened its doors for business along Macomb Boulevard – one of only two businesses open during that time period on what is now Interstate 75 across from Macomb High School Drury's became an iconic local landmark until it shuttered its doors amid allegations by customers that company executives had cheated them out of large profits over several years
In the early 1800s, Highland Park was a small town on the southern edge of Detroit. The area now includes parts of east and west Detroit, as well as Highland Park. In 1837, a group of Scottish settlers named themselves the "Highlanders." They started a farm in what is now Highland Park and gradually added land to their holdings. In 1856, they founded the Highland Park Academy, which still exists today. By 1898, Highland Park had a population of about 2,000 people. The following year saw the opening of Michigan Central School, which became one of the top schools in the state. In 1906, Highland Park was granted city status and began to grow even more. During World War II, many members of the military stationed in Michigan were housed at some of Highland Park's homes. Some residents also used their homes as shelters during that time. "The Highlanders" continue to live in HighlanderPark to this day and contribute importantly to its community spirit
