Today's economy is based largely on government services such as education and health care; however, there are no any significant factories or businesses within downtown or much beyond it aside from some light manufacturing activities conducted near Molineux Stadium across I-75 from downtown where community events take place throughout the weeknight/weekday hours primarily used by students attending nearby Wayne State University which borders downtown on three sides making it difficult to walk more than a few blocks without coming into contact with people working or doing business there either full-time or part-time although recent plans are being made to increase access both within and outside Downtown should this occur along with another major development going around town towards Old Mill Road creating quite a bit more contiguous retail space adjacent to all three aforementioned schools with somewhat increased parking availability given now neighboring workplaces will have easy access street side loading areas available good directly opposite their stores

Highland Park was named for John Grant Macdonald, 5th Earl of Selkirk and future first Prime Minister of Canada. (He had also purchased the land from Native Americans.) In 1873, Macdonald donated sixty acres (twenty hectares) to build a Presbyterian church and school. The town became an incorporated village in 1903. Highland Park has been home to many famous people including Ulysses S. Grant and his son Lincoln; basketball player Julius Erving; football players Joe Namath and Howie Roseman; singer Patsy Cline; author Ivan Turgenev; and CEO Rupert Murdoch. The population of Highland Park began to grow rapidly after it was incorporated as a city in 1868. The city experienced significant growth during World War II and afterwards. Afterward, it experienced a period of decline and decline until its incorporation into the City of Detroit in 1996.
