The town was organized on July 12, 1868 from parts of Warren and Dearborn counties. It was named for John A. Highland, an attorney and one of the first settlers in what is now Highland Park. The history of Highland Park dates back to 1837 when it was established as a village in what is now Michigan Territory. Highland Park began as a small farming community and soon developed into a large agricultural center with grain crops being grown and cattle herding being an important aspect of life. The town's growth came about because it borders on two major cities - Detroit and Grand Rapids - which made it convenient for settlers to trade goods and services with one another. The first residents of Highland Park were farmers who had come from central Canada to find land that would offer them some degree of prosperity. By 1860, the population had increased to over 1,000 people and by 1870, the town had achieved a level of commercial activity that allowed it to become known as one of the leading grain-producing communities in Michigan. This growth coincided with changes within Michigan during this time period; while slavery still prevailed throughout much of America, gradual emancipation began happening in Michigan starting in 1865. This change led to increased competition among farmers for available land, which caused many businesses located in downtowns such as banks and stores to close their doors or move out altogether due to lack of space or competition from other businesses who could offer better prices for goods sold online or through mail order platforms. During this time period there also emerged new industries including automotive manufacturing which took off after Cadillac was produced at nearby Hamtramck Arsenal during World War I; however, these industries did not survive very long due to technological advances which made production methods more efficient than ever before able to produce products at scale without havingto maintain heavy labor forces
