Hazel Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 54,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The name Hazel Park may be derived from a Native American term meaning "place where there are hazelnuts." The first settler in what would become Hazel Park was John Nicholson, who arrived in 1837. Nicholson's family moved to what is now Hazel Park from Sandusky, Ohio some time after that. In 1858, James Fenton bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land at the western edge of present-day Hazel Park from Nicholas Henson for $5 per acre ($140 total). Fenton named his new land Hazel Park after his wife's maiden name, which he had also given her when they were married. He also built a home on the site and called it "Hazel Grove". In 1865, he sold additional land to David Starr Jordan for $10 per acre ($240 total). This included another 600 acres (24 km²) that would later be annexed by HazelPark and renamed Jordan Heights neighborhoods such as Willowbrook and Royal Oak Hills . In 1880, David Starr Jordan donated 2 hectare (4 sq mi; 8½ sq km) of land at what is now Midtown Center to Detroit City College for use as an agricultural college campus known as Chicago State University . That same year, construction began on what would become St Ignatius Catholic Church on Forest Avenue near downtown Hazel Park

Hazel Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Jackson County. The population was 24,638 at the 2010 census, up from 21,723 at the 2000 census. The area now composing Hazel Park was organized as a townsite in 1871 by settlers from Canada and led by James Haggerty. It became a city on July 1, 1903. The community of Hazel Park developed around a large natural gas field discovered near the town in 1892. The field's production ceased after World War I but reopened in 1927 as American Gas Field No. 2 with new production plans that generated much economic growth for Hazel Park until its closure in 1973-74 due to depletion of reserves and expensive government investment. In addition to its natural gas activity, Hazel Park also produced oil until 1974; however, this has not resulted in significant economic development since then despite repeated efforts by various entities including the City of Hazel Park to attract investment back into the city's economy through various marketing campaigns and tax breaks over time.
