The ZIP code for Harper Woods is 49834. The name Harper Woods is derived from a Shawnee word meaning "place of long grass." In 1811 a group of settlers moved to this location and named their new settlement after General George Washington's estate in Virginia. From this point on the community was known as Washington Heights. In 1825 John Harper became one of the first white men to settle in what is now Harper Woods. He donated land to the town for its development. By 1830 he had built a log cabin and started farming his property which included a sawmill, grist mill and post office which opened on July 1, 1830. John Harper died in 1842 and his wife Elizabeth continued to farm their land until her death in 1868. Their children raised cotton until 1865 when it was stopped by Ulysses S Grant as part of his Reconstruction policy following the American Civil War. On November 3rd, 1860 Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd Lincoln at Plymouth Meeting Church in Springfield, Illinois; they would later move to Chicago where he would be elected President in 1912 and serve until 1928; she would die three years later after giving birth to their only child – John F Kennedy (1916-1963).

By 1870, Harper Woods had become an important logging town with its own sawmill and lumberyard. Withought any major natural disasters such as floods or famines, Timber Creek Township continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak in 1925 when it had a population of 3,500 people. However, during World War II Harper Woods declined quickly due to the war's impact on production and business opportunities. In 1956, Timber Creek Township was merged into neighboring Park Heights Township.
