Airdrops placed into Harper Woods by the United States Air Force have been a part of the community since its inception in 1947. The air force has given back to the community through many different ways, and one of the most significant contributions has been their gift of helicopters. The first helicopter was donated to Harper Woods on December 4, 1947. The United States Air Force operates two types of helicopters- the AH-1 Cobra and AH-2 Cobra. Each helicopter is able to seat up to 30 people and can fly for up to 100 miles per hour. They are used for Search and Rescue missions as well as carrying out other tasks in support of military operations. Since then, the United States Air Force has donated over 80 helicopters to Harper Woods. These helicopters are used for a variety of purposes such as education, disaster relief, law enforcement, and more. In addition, since 2009, an annual donation has been made in honor of USAAF veteran General Curtis LeMay which funds scholarships at local universities in the area. This gesture by the air force is sure to help promote local businesses while also benefiting those who have served our country!

The USAF gift history goes back to the early days of the USAF. The first indication of a USAF presence in Korea was in 1951 when the Air Forces participated in Operation Half-moon. This was an aerial bombardment campaign against North Korean positions near the DMZ, which began on July 20th and ended on August 16th. Since then, USAF involvement with Korea has been consistent. In 1953, the USAF joined United Nations forces and took part inOperation Janus where aircraft bombed targets inside North Korea as part of a strategic effort to force Kim Jong Il to come to terms with international control over Pyongyang. In 1960, during the height of the Vietnam War, President John F Kennedy announced that US military advisors would be arriving in South Korea. This move came as a surprise because Seoul had always been seen asSouth Korea’s key vulnerability and it was feared that American advisers might provide cover for South Vietnamese troops engaged in operations north of the Kedumangarmi River. The arrival of American advisors marked a significant change for South Korea and signified an increase in US military interventionism within Southeast Asia. From this point forward, airpower would play an important role in furthering peacekeeping efforts throughout Southeast Asia while also providing support to warring factions within South Korea. USAF involvement continued into the 1970s when NORAD began OPERATION WOODSTOCK which aimedto prevent Soviet Union bombers from hitting Ural Airlines airfields near Pyongyang by striking alternative targets such as oil refineries or other industrial facilities outside North Korea. In 1979 President Jimmy Carter announced plans for reunification of East and West Berlin following national reunification which led to increased tensions between Russia and China over airspace over East Berlin which prompted Moscow to establish its own airspace management structure known as EASTFIRE (East German Airspace System For Flights Over southern Germany). As a result of these events, USAAF assets were brought into line with those stationed atRFJ airport south ofBerlin – becomingEighth Air Force station Frankfurt/Main AFB; Tenth Air Force station Saarbrücken; Twelfth Air Force station Essen; Thirteenth Air Force station Koblenz; FourteenthAirForcestation Bremen; FifteenthAirforcestation Magdeburg). Additionally, twelfth AF relocated from Saarbrucken AB to Gelsenkirchen AB effective 1 October 1989 while thirteenth AF moved from Essen ABto Höhlendorf AB effective 1 May 1990 after being reassigned from RAF Lakenheath AB . These changes reflected both growing NATO membership and changing operations tempo within NATO HQ Allied Command Europe (ACE) – Headquarters European Command (HQE), headquartered at Rijeka Naval Base Croatia since 1995). Although there remained some degreeof USAF infrastructure duplication within NATO HQE (& ACE) due primarilyto unit size limitations), overall command responsibility for regional contingencies had grown significantly through 1990s….. It is interesting to note that although given their unique history & mission each wing has adopted different insignia - Seventh AF adopting Eaglesons insteadof Falcons & Ninth AF adopting Thunderbolts insteadof Raptors - all wings ultimately retained their wartime equipment & hangars until later divestitures/ closings….. Aircraft Airlift Wing: Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules turboprop transports became operational on 14 September 1950 named "Alaska" after Governor Frank Pribylka III who responded favorably when offered free tickets courtesy OFBA member Larry McNaught…………… Boeing 747-200 projet delivery commenced on 15 December 1980………. Delta Airlines DC-9 conversion process started on 6 April1983……………….. Gulfstream Aerospace G650 jetliner purchase commenced on 3 October 1984………………… McDonnell Douglas MD-10 jetliners became operational on 12 February 1987…………….. McDonnell Douglas MD-11 jetliners become operational on 15 November 1991………………………………………. Boeing 737–800 ER became operational 24 March 1994…………………………………. Harper Woods, Michigan is a small town in Calhoun County, Michigan. It is located on the eastern edge of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and was once one of the most important settlements in that region. The town was founded in 1837 by John Harper and his wife Anna Maria. The Hartsons were among the first white settlers in what is now Harper Woods. They started a farm there and soon other pioneers followed them to the area. By 1840, Harper Woods had become an important trading post for farmers in this part of the state. In 1847, John Harper died and his widow continued to run the farm until her death in 1902. After her death, it passed through several families before it was sold to George Davenport Sr., who moved it to its present location. With its strategically placed positions on two rivers and its access to timberlands, Harper Woods became an important center for commerce and culture during its early years. During World War II, Harper Woods served as a military base for troops fighting against Japan from 1944-1945.
In 1836, Harper Woods was founded as a small trading post on the Rouge River by fur traders. The post continued to serve as a center of trade and commerce until the late 1800s. During this time, Harper Woods became known for its production of lumber and other goods. In 1924, Harper Woods was renamed after Prime Minister John A. Macdonald in recognition of his contributions to Canada's modernization process.
