It is the largest city in Wayne County by population and the second largest city in Michigan. Hamtramck is also one of the most populous cities in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Hamtramck was Nicholas Van Dyke who purchased land from Jean Baptiste Point du Sable on July 8, 1796. By 1807, John Stephenson had built a grist mill here and became one of the first companies to send goods through Erie Canal linking Lake Erie with Buffalo, New York. In 1821, Andrew Stevenson leased part of this mill site to David Dixon for $1 per year. A sawmill started operation on October 12, 1830 by Isaac Decker and continued until it closed in 1892 due to lack of customers or competition from larger mills automated by steam power. The current hamlet of Eastpointe was platted as a village on December 3, 1871 by order of Michigan Governor Lucius Niles after an election won by Samuel Coltman as mayor over James Wirtz (a Whig). In 1886 Edward Halsey donated 1 acre (40 m2) east of his farmstead near present day Westpointe Road for use as a public school ground; construction began that same year and was completed three years later under direction of General Electric president George Westinghouse Jr., who donated $5 million towards its construction which included building two miles (3 km) of track leading to it from downtown Detroit The school opened September 15th 1889 with enrollment numbering 106 students; it was designed by noted architect Augustus Saint Johns and cost $10 per pupil plus board and other expenses which funded its operations until 1962 when state government funding ended . Today only portions remainigoof original building including belltower/spire while attached classrooms/ recreation hall are preserved inside old high school structure . There has been no request for reopening since relinquishment authority over property transferred back to township trustees in 2002 . This tells us that not only did Hamtramck have strong schools throughout its history but also that there are still people living and working here today who care about their community
