The National Guard in Hamtramck, Michigan has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The city was founded on November 15, 1837 by land grant from the United States Congress. The first regiment of the Michigan Militia was organized in Hamtramck on October 25, 1847. The unit served until 1850 when it became part of the 1st Regiment of Volunteers (U.S.) for military service in Mexico. On November 2, 1861, Hamtramck was placed under martial law after an insurrection took place at Detroit. On December 12th, 1861,Hamtramck's militia company raised its colors and joined Brigadier General George A. Custer's brigade as part of his march upon Detroit; this action is still commemorated by a monument located on East Grand Boulevard in downtown Hamtramck. From 1865-1866 the 1st Regiment served as garrison troops at Bloomfield while also providing security for Fort Wayne during that time period.; In 1868 they were mustered out and returned home where they continued to serve with distinction through until 1898 when they were disbanded due to budget cuts within the army. In 1902-1903 a new regiment was organized called "The Wolverines" and served with distinction during World War I before being reactivated in 1924 and serving continuously through World War II; finally being disbanded following their participation in that war. Since then there have been numerous units authorized to serve with distinction with the National Guard including two battalions currently stationed in Iraq; however no active duty exercises have occurred within Hamtramck since 2006 which may be related to budgetary reasons.- From 10/1/1991 thru 9/30/2006 only males over 21 years old could be enlisted into the National Guard and all females had to reenlist or request mobilization status which caused many female soldiers who had completed their enlistments not to receive benefits such as unemployment compensation or veteran benefits which would have allowed them full eligibility for federal programs like Social Security and Veterans Affairs.- This policy change was changed effective 8/15/2007 allowing females between 18 and 26 years old who are citizens of one of 50 U.S./DELAWARE counties if they are registered with Selective Service agencies such as Women’s Army Corps (WAC) can enlist without having to reenlist or request mobilization status

The first village in what is now Hamtramck was called Pembina, which was named for a Canadian variety of maple that grew plentifully there. In 1837, The Huron Indian Tribe ceded their land to the United States for development as part of Treaty 8. The town started off as a small farming community with few buildings other than schools and churches located on farms near where water supplies were available. In 1871, an act of Congress changed Hamtramck's name to Lansingburgh to represent its growing commercial importance as a transportation center connecting two major railroadsvia Grand Rapids and Detroit. At its peak during World War I, Lansingburgh had 6 stores, 20 businesses and 100 residents; however by 1919 it had only 1 store and 10 businesses remaining due to prohibitionism among some in Lansingburgh's business establishment who opposed any form of alcohol sales anywhere within city limits

Hamtramck is an unincorporated community in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 576 at the 2010 census. Hamtramck is located on the east bank of the Rouge River. It is home to a small shopping center and two schools, both of which are public Schools. Hamtramck has been inhabited by humans since at least the year 500 AD according to oral history. The first permanent settler in what is now Hamtramck Township was John Parkhurst who arrived in 1824 from Wales. In 1834 Joshua Walton settled here and created a mill race on the Rouge River which became known as Walton's Landing after him. By 1870 there were 100 residents in Hamtramck Township. That number decreased to 36 by 1890 due to migration to other townships and states during the Panic of 1893-1894 when prices for land crashed because of overproduction on farms). The opening of the Saginaw-Detroit Railroad in 1881 caused a large influx of people into Hamtramcks Township from various parts of Michigan and neighboring Indiana counties primarily for work on its line. Many stores opened up along with new housing developments such as Dearborn Heights, Germantown, and Eastpointe.. After World War II many families moved back into Hammertown after being displaced by decimated area due to development projects around Detroit including Platt Arena and Mound Road/Southfield Freeway etc., however some stayed until they could find another home closer to work or family members outside their original community range In 1957 Hamtramck had 4 businesses employing 50 workers: 2 predictors (a machine that makes predictions about future events) and 2 printers (one used newsprint while one printed textbooks). Today only 1 business employs 10 workers making it one of highest concentration areas for low wage jobs within Wayne County outside Detroit proper

The name change came about because landowner Herman Hammelshausen objected to his town being called "Hamelmond" after his home village in Germany.
