The Marine Corps deployment history in Hamtramck, Michigan began with the organization of a company Headquarters Battery, Company M on December 7, 1941. The battery was organized into four Battalions and two Platoons. On January 16, 1942 the 1st Battalion was re-activated from the reactivated 2nd Battalion and redesignated as Company L. In February 1942 the 3rd Battalion was activated from the inactive 4th Battalion and redesignated as Company K. On May 25, 1942 Company M lost its commanding officer when Captain Harry J. Donoghue resigned due to family responsibilities. Lieutenant Colonel John W. Fenton took command of the battalion effective June 1st. In July 1942 companies A & B were transferred to Companies L & K from Companies D & E which had been disbanded since December 1941 because of lack of personnel or equipment available for such a large unit deployment overseas at that time . On October 12th Squadron Sqn (V) arrived inHamtramck from Calumet City Army Air Field after being activated there on September 10th . It remained active until it was disbanded on October 26th . In November 1942 both battalions became part of I Marine Expeditionary Force (IMEF). On December 8th Lieutenant Colonel Fenton relieved Captain Donoghue as Commanding Officer for I MEF in Camp Pendleton California where he would stay until March 1943 when he returned to duty with I MEF in Okinawa Japan where he died on April 15th 1945
Hamtramck is a city in Midwestern Michigan, United States. The population was 41,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County. Hamtramck is one of the most ethnically diverse and religiously diverse cities in America. The first European to visit what is now Hamtramck was French Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1779, during his expedition from Detroit to Lake Superior. He named the area "Mackinac Island" after General James Mackinac who had explored and claimed it for France in 1789. In 1817, Nicholas St.-Jacques arrived in what became Hamtramck as part of Colonel John Czarnecki's Army of Occupation following the war with Mexico over Texas. He founded a Catholic mission on Mackinac Island and named it St.-Jacques-de-la-Crosse (later renamed Notre Dame de la Croix). The settlement grew rapidly and by 1828 there were 160 residents living on Mackinac Island alone. In 1840, when Detroit became an American city, St.-Jacques sold all his land north of Gratiot Avenue to become a part of that city; this left Hamtramck with only its current location north of Saginaw Boulevard as its permanent resident community. The early days of Hamtramck were difficult because there was no railroads or means by which goods could be transported into or out of the town; however, through hard work and determination these days many people enjoy warm weather summer vacation homes just outside the city limits where they can enjoy easy access to all that Hamtramcks has to offer annual events like car shows, carnivals etc., make for great family fun while downtown businesses lead busy lives serving up their products year round

During World War II, Hamtramck was an important center for munitions production due to its proximity to several large factories operated by United States war industries. After the war ended,Hamtramack experienced significant economic decline until recent years when it has regained some of its former prominence as a center for industrial research and development
