By 1830, many farmers had moved into the area and started growing corn, beans, potatoes, sugar beets and apples; which led to what is now known as "the old hamlet." The town of Hamtramck was founded on October 15, 1837 by James Wirtz with land given him by George Armstrong Custer for himself and others who had helped him build Fort Wayne during the Kossuth War.
