In 1951, Harry's merged with another grocer, Wadleigh's Stores Inc., which ultimately led to the closure of Harry's Grocery Store in 1978. However, it is still standing today and is used as a bakery by locals and tourists alike. In 1978, Don Armstrong opened his own roastery called Don Armstrong Roasters on East Main Street adjacent to City Hall in Hamtramck. At that time, Hamtramck was one of only a few towns within Michigan with its own roasting company - this was also unusual for those times because most cafes roamed across state lines buying their beans direct from farmers markets or other specialty stores throughout America).
