Hamtramck is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 97,857 at the 2010 census, making it the seventh-largest city in Michigan and its third-largest city of color. Hamtramck is located in Midwestern Michigan on the north bank of the Maumee River and is bordered by Macomb County to the north, Oakland County to the east, and Wayne County to the south. The area now known as Hamtramck dates back to 1799 when General John Wilkinson established a trading post here after successful fur trading campaigns in what is now Canada. The area became part of Washtenaw County in 1814 but was again placed within Macomb County until it was annexed by Detroit in 1835. In 1847, Hamtramck became one of two cities chosen as sites for a new county seat because its location made it an ideal place for both trade and industry. The first courthouse was built here in 1850; however, due to financial problems, only partial construction began until 1854 when all but two blocks were completed. The resulting town had a population of about fifty people and quickly became an important center for commerce and industry during this time period with mills such as Parma & Company (now Peregrine Paper), Spring Steel Works, Armour Rubber Goods Co., American Canning Works, Canadian Canning Factory No 1 (later Canadian Canning Factory No 2) and others developed along with sugar refineries like Jardine Mills & Refinery which opened their doors here in 1899 becoming one of America's leading candy producers before being taken over by Hershey Foods Corporation in 1958. When Detroit experienced another economic downturn starting around 1930%, Hamtramack slowly lost some market share to neighboring Rouge Township as production moved from downtownDetroit into smaller plants scattered throughout Windsor Township which also included other key industrial sectors including aluminum smelting operations operated by Alcoa which closed its plant near Hamtramck Boulevard between Second Street and Third Street around 1951 while other major companies operating there such as Ford Motor Company shut down or relocated their operations elsewhere during this time frame including Chrysler Motors Corporation who moved their car manufacturing operation from Flint Heights () just west of Detroit downriver towards Grosse Pointe Park () subsequently becoming one of America's first large automakers followed soon thereafter by Ford Motor Company moving their resources upstream towards Dearborn Heights (). Hamtramck is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 31,811 at the 2010 census. Hamtramck has been an incorporated city since 1871. It is one of the most populous cities in Michigan and it is the cultural and commercial center of the Flint metropolitan area. Hamtramck was settled by German immigrants in what is now upper-central Michigan during the 18th century. The first hamlet on this site was called "Trotterdam" after Gottfried Wilhelm Von Toller, a judge who served in 1784–88 as First Justice of the Peace for Wayne County. In 1797, fur trader Nicholas Biddle purchased land east of present-day Hamtramck from the Chippewa Indians for $1,000 cash. He named his new settlement "Trotterdam". At that time there were only two homes in Hamtramk: David Schoenbrun's home on Shiawassee Street and John Fritchey's home on Cannery Road south of US 24 (now Gratiot Avenue). The first settler to reside permanently in Hamtramck was Friedrich Zimmerman (1798–1868), who arrived with his family from Germany around 1800. In 1821, a group of Methodists landed at Rotterdam Cove on Upper Saginaw Bay to found what would becomeHamtramck Methodist Church. The Methodists brought their own church building which they used until 1840 when they moved to their current location at 715 Main Street east of US 21 (now Dearborn Avenue). The town charter was granted on May 10, 1871 by Mayor Isaac Henschelmeyer following a public election held that same day; it provided for an incorporation process which took three years to complete due to popular opposition from citizens who felt that they had already been incorporated into other townships within Washtenaw County or even into Detroit Township! On November 15, 1871 when all but one member had been added thereto – David Schoenbrun – Hamtramck became an official City with its own Board of Commissioners! During its early years Hamtramck experienced many boom and bust times due largely to natural resources such as lumber and coal that were being exploited nearby but also becauseof factors associated with American society such as railroad construction which began moving goods through the region during this time period; these transportation changes created opportunities for businesses like grocery stores and automobiles while reducing competition among small businesses creating several job losses along with increased prices for goods! There were also social changes taking place during this era including women gaining rights within polite society while men still worked primarily outside the home; African Americans starting coming into contact with white people both inside and outside of work where some bought land before becoming farmers themselves! This interaction produced mixed results as many whites saw black people not as equals but instead saw them as inferiors needing assistance getting ahead while some blacks felt discriminated against nonetheless leading eventually to violent protests against white authorities throughout much of America during this time period! However progress continued despite these challenges; by 1925 African Americans made up just 5% percentof all city residents while whites constituted 95%!!! By 1990s numbers had reversed somewhat thanks largely to economic development efforts focused upon downtown revitalization although overall race relations have remained relatively unchanged
