Grosse Pointe Woods is located on the southern shore of Lake Huron between Detroit and Inkster. The community began as a small hamlet on the banks of the Rouge River just east of present-day Grosse Pointe Heights. The name derived from "grosse pointe" (a high point), which became common after a surveyor named John Davenport surveyed land in 1824 that included what is now Grosse Pointe Woods. Because it lay on an important shipping route between Detroit and Buffalo, Grosse Pointe Woods became one of the most prosperous communities in Wayne County during its early years. In 1858, Grosse Pointe Woods annexed neighboring Irontown to form a single municipality known as "Grosse Pointe." During World War II, Grosse Pointe Woods was home to much activity related to production at Ford's Rouge auto plant; over 1 million pounds (450 metric tons) of aluminum were produced at this site alone during World War II. After the war, many jobs turned away from Aluminum production due to competition from cheaper foreign products but many locals maintain that spending time around Alderney Island - where Ford's old Rouge Plant used to be located - helped make them nostalgic for their former hometowns' manufacturing heyday. Today, although aluminum production has waned since then – due mostly to cheaper Asian imports – much else about Grosse Points days are still remembered fondly by those who lived there: The beautiful hillside neighborhoods bordered bystate Route 4 on one side and Lakeshore Drive on the other; close proximity to downtownDetroit; and easy access both into town center via state routes 2 and 4 or via Interstate 94 or I-75 outside town limits. Grosse Pointe Woods is a small town in Michigan, located on the edge of the city of Detroit. The population was 3,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wayne County municipality. Grosse Pointe Woods was named after General George Washington's estate in New York City and was first settled by French Canadians who arrived in 1810. The area now known as Grosse Pointe Woods belonged to Ottawa Township until it became part of Detroit in 1840. After being annexed by Detroit, Ottawa Township voted to become a separate village called Grosse Pointe on November 10, 1851. By 1870, all but one block of what is now Grosse Pointe Woods had been developed and there were only about 100 residents living there. However, during World War II many Grosse Pointe Woods citizens volunteered for military service and some constructed airfields or other wartime facilities within the town limits. With the war over and new residents moving into town during the postwar period, development resumed with many homes being built in Putnam Park along Woodward Avenue between Clairmont Boulevard and Willow Run Road (now Gratiot Avenue). In 1960, when Grosse Pointe Woods incorporated as a municipality, it had a population of 4,500 people. The growth of suburban shopping malls throughout much of Michigan during the late 20th century led to an increase in traffic through Grosse Pointe Woods; however, that has since decreased due to more widespread development nearby including Dearborn Heights and Warren Hills communities which have larger populations and can handle their own trucking lanes without causing problems for locals living near them. Additionally, with so few schools within walking distance for most families residing in town center-like areas like Putnam Park-the saturation level of school supplies available locally has kept prices low for shoppers throughout most years past; this helps keep downtown businesses open even on holidays such as Christmas or New Year's Eve while bringing more economic stability to shops within walking range rather than large box stores taking away jobs from local employees over holiday periods.
