Grosse Pointe Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,823 at the 2010 census. Grosse Pointe Park is part of the Detroit–Warren Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Grosse Pointe Park was Major Pierre Henry De La Salle on July 11, 1679. He named it after his estate in Normandy where he had been living until that point. It wasn't until 1807 when General George Washington's army camped here while marching through Detroit during the Battle of Fort Dearborn that Americans began to explore this area. In 1828 Czar Alexander I of Russia founded the village of Novosibirsk in present-day Grosse Pointe Park and assigned it to French Canadian colonists for $10 per acre ($ today). This land was located along one edge of what is now Wayne County and included lands near present-day Grosse Pointe Park as well as parts of Clinton Township and Sterling Heights. In 1834 Russian colonists sold their holdings back to France for $35 per acre ($ today). On July 15, 1836, The Village of Novosibirsk merged with the Village of Detroit so that both villages would have more residents and shared services including schools, churches and other civic amenities. A cemetery opened in November 1840 which still exists within Grosse Pointe Park limits today. On October 17, 1850 Napoleon III issued Order No 1 legalizing religious use among Christians only in Michigan but not Ann Arbor or any other location outside Michigan without royal sanction because "such an undertaking could not be entrusted to ordinary citizens." This order applied specifically to Catholics who were then living mainly within Catholic enclaves such as West Bloomfield Township (later renamed Monroe Township), East Detroit Township (later renamed Dearborn Heights), Highland Hills Township (later renamed Royal Oak), Mount Pleasant Borough ( later renamed Farmington Hills) and Gratiot Borough (later renamed Orion). Muslims who were also living mainly within Catholic enclaves were exempt from this order but their mosques were closed by Order No 2 issued two weeks later which punished all non-Catholic religious activities inside Ontario except those sanctioned by Order No 1 which continued even though no formal legal entity existed to carry out these activities under those specific terms definition- thus endangering both Catholics’ privacy rights as well as national security concerns about Muslim infiltration into America from abroad On December 7th 1850 Emperor Napoleon III reissuedOrder No 2 prohibiting religious activities inside Canada except those sanctioned by Order No 1 otherwise known as open door policy . Most Catholics who lived within Toronto/Ann Arbor proper relocated there instead due to fear for their safety should orders emanating from Paris fall into disrepair or be overturned altogether . However some individuals like Frs John Daly and Cornelius Ryan continued with their traditional practices despite being subject to daily surveillance by the police forces tasked with enforcing Napoleon III's orders . By 1860 over 4000 people lived within downtown Toronto limits while 3000 people resided within Ann Arbor proper boundaries - almost 60% of all Catholics currently residing in Upper Michigan
