Grosse Pointe Park is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 48,844 at the 2010 census. Grosse Pointe Park is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The name Grosse Pointe Park comes from the town of Grosse Pointe on the west bank of the River Rouge in Wayne County, Michigan. The village was founded by General David Dixon in 1825 and named for Captain John Graves Simcoe's estate on the eastern bank of the Rouge. In 1837, as part of a land grant to Bishop Watterson from Nicholas Strothers, Dixon set out two miles (3 km) north of Grosse Pointe village on what is now known as State Road 505 and laid out a townsite with seven blocks square. In 1839, he donated land to the City of Detroit for its incorporation as a city. The first settler in what is now Grosse Pointe Park was Abram Cushing who arrived there in 1840 under contract from John Dixson, Surveyor-General for Wayne County and father-in-law of General David Dixon. He built his house on present day Elm Street near State Road 505 about 6 miles (10 km) east of where Detroit would be incorporated as a city six years later on November 5th, 1847 under Chief Justice Augustus Kelley's order following successful petitioning by residents along that stretch of riverfront between Dearborn Heights and Warren Woods which had been designated as open space since 1796 when Governor John Livingston granted exclusive hunting rights to British subjects living within foursquare miles (12 km²). In 1850 A&P Store owner Amos Eaton moved his store 1 block south from current location then across Depot Street into what is now Lot 706 off Gratiot Avenue just east of Belle Isle Boulevard before moving again 3 blocks south onto Niles Avenue before finally settling at lot number 8 in 1865 after migrating from Quincy Township near Chicago Illinois during that year’s Great Migration seeking better working opportunities relative to their Midwest counterparts back home….. In 1870 Nathan Drake opened his grocery store atAddison & Gratiot Streets which became one block north up Addison Ave until it burned down in 1893…. By 1880 all but one surviving Block House were vacated or destroyed due to fire damage caused by Progress Railroads trackage running through town…. Many settlers also migrated away during this time including Captains George Stephenson and Samuel Morse who established mills at Greenfield Center northwest side street just southeast corner today’s Woodward Ave ….. Population peaked around 1900 with over 60 families residing therein according to township records; however many left during prohibitionist fervor sweeping America throughout 1920….. With declining populations came decreasing levels thereof until 1948 when only 24 families resided within boundaries then reduced even further by 2000 when only 10 individuals remained……… Growth has resumed somewhat recently with more than 20 families currently residing there according to township records………. After being vacant for many years numerous small businesses have reopened including several convenience stores………… Old timers recall 'the good old days': pre prohibition days when people could buy beer without getting charged an excise tax so called "the nickel"
