When the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan in 1948, it was a tradition that continues today. The first time that the Air National Guard helicopter served as an airlift for members of the US Military was on December 7th, 1947. At that time, only five helicopters were available for military transport duty and two were assigned to Tactical Air Command (TAC). With this new capability, commanders could more easily move troops and supplies to where they needed them most. On December 7th 1947, three CH-47E Chinook helicopters from Troop E 135th Aviation Regiment (Air National Guard) lifted General Curtis LeMay and his staff onto board after they arrived by plane at Grand Rapids Municipal Airport. This event marked the beginning of what would become a longstanding relationship between USAF and the Michigan Air National Guard. In 1949, Troop A 536th Rescue Squadron was activated at Grand Rapids Municipal Airport with four Boeing 314Cs flown by Major Gary Willszki. This squadron responded to any incidents involving downed or missing aircraft within 25 miles of Grand Rapids Municipal Airport. From its inception until 1993, rescue services responded to accidents including those caused by lightning strikes; floods; tornadoes; hurricanes; earthquakes; snowstorms and numerous other emergencies.
