The Coast Guard first arrived in Grandville, Michigan on November 6, 1892. The first Commandant of the Coast Guard was Captain John Fenton.
Grandville is a small town in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. Grandville is known for itsgd lakes, rolling hills and dramatic views of the surrounding mountains. The community takes its name from General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the American Civil War and was given the Medal of Honor for his part in that conflict. The first settler in what is now Grandville was John Ledyard, who arrived in 1836. He named his new settlement after President James K. Polk, who had been Whig Party president that year. The first store opened in 1840 and soon there were several other businesses operating in the town. In 1849, a post office was established here and remained open until it closed on March 15, 1909. The growth of Grandville began to take hold during the late 1800s as agricultural acreage began to be developed around town limits. A sawmill started up in 1869 and continues to operate today; a flour mill followed suit two years later; and an oil refinery opened up in 1902-19031985 making Grandville one of Michigan's largest sources of petroleum products exports. During World War II, local industries produced munitions such as aircraft parts (including B-17 Flying Fortress production), tires, tanks andProxy missiles used by Nazi Germany during World War II-immediately after Pearl Harbor (December 7th 1941). After 1945 many manufacturing jobs left Grand Rapids while others moved into science and technology based companies such as Intel (founder), Microsoft (headquarters) or Ford Motor Co. In recent years much heavy machinery has come downriver from Ericsson Group's facility south of Traverse City via I-94 which has led to increased traffic congestion on US Highway 231 eastbound between this stoplight interchange with I-94 https://www2a2a2a2a0c9ff00abdc4d4e7fddcdc1b6ea5af0c. Grandville is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Grand Rapids County. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Wolverine metropolitan area, which has a population of 10 million people. The first permanent settler in what is now Grandville was Nicholas Sargent in 1824, who named his land "Nicollet Township." The city was founded on July 16, 1836 by John Witherspoon and others as the capital of Washtenaw County due to its strategic location near both Detroit and Ann Arbor. The town rapidly became an important commercial center with shipbuilding, farming, lumbering and other industries developing along river valleys that served as transportation corridors for goods and passengers. In 1870, construction began on what would become Michigan State University; today it forms one half of the campus known as MSU-Grand Rapids In 1916 Grand Valley Lumber Company merged with two other lumber companies to create American Lumber Co., which remains one of Michigan's largest employer groups today. One result of World War I were mass layoffs across many industries due to requisitioning for military production; this led to a dramatic growth in intercity bus travel within Dearborn County – now called "Grand Valley Transit" – which helped make Grand Rapids into a major transportation hub during the war years. The downtown business district grew gradually through the 1920s until demolition started in earnest in 1957 (the last vestige remaining being Storrs Hall) following approval by then-Mayor George Condon to build Interstate 94 directly north from downtown over Woodward Avenue just west of Stadium Boulevard – becoming one of metro Detroit’s most notorious examples of post-war urban renewal designed around automotive production rather than retail or cultural attractions
The area now known as Grandville was first settled by the Potawatomi in 1812. The town was founded on the east side of the Ottawa River, about where present-day Grand Rapids is located. In 1827, the town became a county seat and was renamed after George Washington, who had been president of the United States at the time.
