The Grand Rapids Navy Yard played an important role in the development of the United States Navy. The Yard was founded on December 14, 1812 by Commodore James K. Polk and Rear Admiral John Hull with the ambition of creating a navy to protect America’s interests abroad. The first ship to dock at the Grand Rapids Navy Yard was USS Constitution in 1814. In 1865, theyard became part of the newly formed Naval Forces Europe when it moved from Portsmouth, Rhode Island to Oranienburg, Russia. It closed its doors in 1970 and its assets were sold off for scrap metal. Today, visitors can see evidence of this history at the Great Lakes Naval Museum which is located on Water Street near I-94. The museum has a collection of naval uniforms, cannons, anchors, ships models and more dating back to 1775 when American warships sailed into Lake Michigan to patrol against Spanish forces. This structure served as headquarters for several agencies including US Army Corps Of Engineers until 1970 when that agency relocated to Gerald R Ford Presidential Library & Museum adjacent to I-94 exit 313A". subsequent expansion beyond federal jurisdiction led to merger with other government agencies represented within USPS district codes beginning 1993 including Food And Drug Administration (FDA) headquartered at 825 First Ave NE," Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Headquarters at 401 Independence Ave SE" Labor Management Board (LMB) located at 611 Main StreetNW" before becoming an employee benefit plan provider subsidiary known as Employee Benefit Solutions Inc..
