It is difficult to remember the past, but there are moments that will stay with us forever. One such moment was when my grandparents brought in their guns from World War II. For a few years, they shared stories of those early days of gun ownership and how much fun it was to shoot targets or take target practice. It was an experience that Will and I enjoyed too, since we were always drawn to the firearms in our family. One of my cousins also became interested inguns after watching an episode about them on television. He would go into great detail about how each gun worked and what different types of ammunition he could use. We would all be fascinated by his love for firearms and the fact that he could talk so specifically about them! As time passed, other members of our family got involved in gun ownership as well- My father started taking rifles hunting and eventually became a pro shotbuilder/gunsmith. Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 47,651 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit, with a population of 753,737 as of 2019. The City of Grand Rapids was founded on October 25, 1846 by fur traders and missionaries led by Rev. George Wright and others from Boston and other parts of New England who were interested in what they called "the new world." The settlement that would become Grand Rapids was laid out on September 22, 1847 by contractor John Silliman from Albany, New York; it had been organized as a town on July 5th that year under the name "Hudsonville," but reverted to its original name on November 2nd when it became part of Upper Canada following its incorporation as a province within the United States. By 1851, however, Hudsonville's population had reached only about 50 people; so on December 14th of that year, an act was passed authorizing the erection of a public building for Grand Rapids which would become known as State House Square today. The first public meeting in what is now Grand Rapids took place on January 10th, 1851 at The Masonic Hall where delegates from Hudsonville met to form a committee to organize their new community. They soon produced regulations for conducting themselves under section 9 (a) (1) thereof which stated: "No person shall be guilty if he does not attend or take part in any public meeting convened for the purpose of carrying into execution any resolution or ordinance passed by this body". On February 1st another act was passed increasing the membership from 10 to 20 members with power to give directions relative to elections etc., all without having first obtained unanimous approval from all those present...In view cf these early activities some may ask why no permanent home could be erected until such time as property could be landed sufficient for such an undertaking...On April 6th Rev G W Wheelock arrived with his family from Canada securities company established at Sandwich Inlet near Mackinac Island and set up housekeeping at 2243 Superior Street NW corner First Avenue NW while still waiting for land suitable for his proposed village site near US 26 & Canadian Four Corners roadstead east side...He also bought five acres (2 ha) north side lot number one in what is now Pioneer Park off I-5 next door to then newly opened water tower #1 used by Ford Motor Company during World War II before being knocked down due to subsidence) In less than two months he had secured title deeds totaling 382 contiguous acres including 3/4 mile wide strip adjacent east side Lot 8 opposite water tower--now known as Pioneer Park - plus lots 4 & 5 adjoining along Depot Road NE corner First Avenue NW corner Second Avenue NW between Main Street NE & Depot Road SW grand total = 514 acres total area purchased over $10 per acre
