Grand Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 553,664 as of 2018, making it the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit. The Grand Rapids metropolitan area has a population of 1,523,815 people as of 2019. The first European settlers in what is now Grand Rapids were French traders and missionaries from Quebec who arrived in 1796. In 1825, the first steamboat ever built in America was launched here by John Darnall and his partners; this ship transported passengers between Muskegon Heights on the Upper Peninsula (now Muskegon Heights Township) and Mackinac Island off lower Michigan's Lower Peninsula. In 1836, General Anthony Wayne founded what would become Wayne County—the only county in Michigan without Indian reservations—and named it for his father-in-law, George Washington Carver. In 1862, Grand Rapids became one of three cities to be included within the newly created State of Michigan when that state was organized out of eastern Indiana and western Ohio; other two were Lansing ( east side) and Chicago (west side). It wasn't until 1916 that grand rapids began to take on its present moniker: "City of Arts & Sciences." With rapid growth during World War II due to wartime production at nearby tool plants and munitions works located along River Rouge Boulevard just east of downtown GrandRapids—a strategic location given its access to both rivers—the nickname stuck around until 1967 when art museums moved into new buildings on University Avenue near downtown which changed the name once again to "GrandRapids". Growth slowed during the 1990s due largely to demographic changes including an increased emphasis on education among residents while businesses closed or merged over time with few exceptions such as Jamba Juice locations closing down followed by a resurgence in arts events starting with ArtPrize back in 2009 which continues today with numerous galleries, restaurants and sports stadiums scattered throughout downtown sometimes referred to as "Downtown GrandRapids". Most recently several large office buildings have been built near downtown along I-75/Mackinac Bridge leading upriver toward Midtown Lansing increasing competition for limited parking spaces but also drawing more visitors from further away causing some concern about gentrification however much recent development has helped mitigate these concerns somewhat by creating pedestrian malls running through most core areas providing easy access to all types of shops/restaurants etc.. Downtown prostitution crackdown announced by CityLab last year had little impact on activity although following increase may lead some prostitutes out into other districts where they ply their trade

In 1932, Dutch Schultz founded Starbucks, which became one of the largest coffee companies in the world. Starbucks developed a reputation for high-quality coffee that continues today. The first espresso machines appeared around 1912. They were used by baristas to make small batches of coffee with different strengths and flavors (or “variationsâ€). These early espresso machines were difficult to use and required a lot of effort to produce great results. However, over time they became more popular because they produced a rich Contrasto flavor that was hard to replicate using other methods. In 1938, Angelo Petrini started roasting his own beans on site at his bakery in Rome called Pasticceria Petrini & Cie.. Petrini’s beans became known as Italy’s Best Coffee due to their high-quality taste and amazing coloration (a blueberry or raspberry flavor). Petrini’s company continued roasting until 1971 when it merged with two other smaller businesses (Ferrari Bros., Ristorante Rustico dellOstello) into Federico Fellin Speranza Sr.'s Lavazza Group Limited which still sells its products direct from origin under the name Lavazza No 1 Coffee Shop Ltd..
