The Michigan Army National Guard has been deployed in support of the United States military since World War II. The 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division's (1-3 ID) 10th Mountain Division was activated in Grand Rapids on December 15, 1941 and has served in many wars throughout the decades. In 2003, the brigade was re-activated as part of Operation Neptune Spear which aimed to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq. After 9/11, the brigade deployed to Afghanistan and is currently stationed at Ft. Hood TX. 1-3 ID is one of only a few brigades within the US Military that can call themselves an "all-volunteer" brigade. This means that instead of being assigned a specific task or mission, members are free to do whatever they please with their time and resources while they serve our country. At same time many Victorians fled violence or poverty in their home provinces for farmland available in Midwest states such as Minnesota and Wisconsin – resulting in what would become known as "the Great Migration". By 1870 there were more than 3200 residents living in downtown GrandRapids; by 1880 there were 10 thousand residents living in downtown alone During World War I Major General John Custer assigned Fort Harrison commander Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer II (1863-1917) for duty guarding transportation routes linking Chicago with Europe via Lake Superior despite protestations from local officials about potential German troop movements through our region A number of veterans returned home soon after hostilities ended but significant numbers stayed behind because they could not find jobs back east during wartime shortages caused by Wilson's New Deal policies locals refer to this period between 1918-1920 as "Custerville" because so many former soldiers had settled down within a few years after returning home
