The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) were one of the teams that participated in the 1946-47 NHL season. The Griffins played their home games at the Grand Rapids Civic Auditorium. The team was part of the Western Hockey League (WHL). In 1947, the Blackhawks organization founded a hockey division within their United States Hockey League (USHL) which included teams located in Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul. In order to participate in this new league, the Hawks added the Griffin as a charter member. The team would play its first game on November 16, 1947 against the Omaha Lancers from Omaha, Nebraska. In 1948-49, head coach Red Kelly moved from Detroit to take over coaching duties with the Griffins and assistant coach Bernie Parent taking over player personnel responsibilities for half of that season. With no players being drafted during those two seasons due to World War II service, it was up to Kelly and Parent to sign free agents such as Art Ross and Jim Thorpe who had been playing in Europe at that time. One of their signings during these pre-draft years was goaltender Harry Howell who would go on to win three Stanley Cups with Detroit while playing for them between 1945-51 prior to joining the Griffins in 1949-50; Howell would also be named MVP of his rookie campaign with Detroit that year when he led all goaltenders in scoring with 30 goals and 54 assists for 88 points (a career high). In total, Canadiens' goalie Gilles Gratton would start 7 games for Montreal during that same playoffs run but was “the last man standing” due largely to his poor performance against Toronto where he allowed 25 goals on 66 shots while allowing just 3 goals on 17 shots against Cleveland’s Johnny Bowerman; Gratton finished fourth behind Toronto’s Don Cherry (who won 2 MVP Awards), Philadelphia’s Bobby Clarke (.827 sv percentage), Boston Bruins’ Ray Bourque (.829 sv percentage) & Montreal's Jean Beliveau (.914 sv percentage). After missing most of 1949-50 due an injury sustained early in camp, Howell rejoined Detroit for 50%WWF ice time leading up to breakaway playoff series vs Toronto where he started Game 1 but allowed 5 goals on 18 shots before being pulled after giving up 4 unanswered goals late in regulation; however, Tigers regained home ice winning Game 2 6–3 before losing Games 3 & 4 9–6 behind Howe's only save off back-to-back Hat Trickters Sergei Fedorov & Maurice Richard - both scorers for Canada at WHA's Second All Star Game which saw Gordie Howe become only second player ever To win an Olympic gold medal as a Professional Athlete! The United States Air Force is a branch of the military that provides air support to state and local governments. It was founded as the American Volunteer Group in September 1917. The USAF traces its origins to World War I when America entered the conflict on the side of Great Britain. The Air Service was created as part of a plan to provide strategic bomber power to Allied forces during the war. One important contribution of theAAF was providing aerial refueling for fighter planes, which allowed them to reach their destination safely and with increased firepower. After World War II, it became clear that air power could not be used only in warfare; it had to be used for economic development and peacekeeping missions. In 1948, the USAF created Continental Commands, which were responsible for command and control of all US airspace. This gave rise to controversies over who should have jurisdiction over UHF frequencies owned by foreign countries such as China and Russia. In 1973, responsibility for Western Hemisphere airspace passed from Continental Command to NATO member Canada under the new North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Cold War ended withthe collapse of communism in 1991, but left many questions unanswered about how airpower would be employed in future conflicts. In 1994, Congress passed Operation Neptune's Spear, which activated 1% or “blue-on-blue” combatting measures within USAF against members of al-Qaeda inside Afghanistan while also providing logistical support for NATO forces there. In 1846, the Grand Rapids post office was established, and the first town meeting was held in that same year. In 1861, the United States Postal Service established a mail route between Lansing, Michigan and Grand Rapids. By 1865, the population of Grand Rapids had grown to 350 residents. In 1868, the Western Union Telegraph Company organized a telegraph line between Lansing and Grand Rapids. That same year, the first railroad train arrived inGrandRapids; it was operated bythe Michigan Central Railroad company. In 1872, two petitions were submitted to Congress requesting that Detroit be annexed into Grand Rapids as its second city; neither petition received any response. That same year saw the opening of one ofGR's first stores: The Haines Store at Fourth Street and Main Avenue became the first store in what is now downtown GR. In 1875,GR completed its annexation into Michigan Statehood; this event is celebrated annually with an annual parade through downtownGR . On July 4th 1898, a fire destroyed much of downtown GR during a heat wave caused by dry conditions following heavy rainstorms across much of Canada
