Grand Haven, Michigan is a city in the US state of Michigan. The population was 41,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County. The first settlers in what is now Grand Haven were German immigrants who arrived in 1814. The town was founded on the Huron River by Captain John Sills and his family. In 1835, General James Kieft established Fort Michilimackinac to control trade between Upper Michigan and Lower Canada; Grand Haven became part of this boundary. In 1837, George Hennepin became the first white settler in what is now Washtenaw County when he came from Ottawa Township, Ontario with his family to start a farm on Mud Lake near present-day Midland City. By 1840, all of eastern Michigan had been annexed into the United States as part of the Compromise Of 1850 which granted slavery states citizenship while adding free men to each state—Michigan was not one of these states. This caused great upset among anti-slavery people in Lansing and Detroit who felt that their rights as citizens were being violated by this addition to America. Consequently, they began a series of protests culminating with a violent confrontation with federal troops at Dearborn Heights on November 25, 1849 which resulted in over 20 injuries and $5 thousand damage (the total value of property damage done during Perry Mason cases decided during that period). The protesters were eventually arrested but succeeded in rallying enough support to stage another protest against Ulysses S Grant's inauguration four days later at Ford Hall (now University Park), where they again clashed with government troops before being dispersed by police using tear gas and pepper spray. In 1861–1865 Grand Haven served as an important staging ground for the Union army during the American Civil War; it was also home to Camp Butler where General Philip Sheridan developed plans for Operation Overlord which led to Battle of Gettysburg on July 4th, 1863. Afterward, Grand Haven resumed its role as an agricultural center until it lost its status as a major commercial center after World War II due to increased trucking traffic and suburban development around it. However, recent economic growth has seen Grand Haven become once again a major cultural destination – both within Michigan itself and across North America – thanks largely to its rich history and architecture dating back more than 200 years
