Since the early 1800s, the Grand Haven area has been home to an army garrison. The first military installation in town was Fort Snelling in 1824. Over time, other installations have been built here, including Camp Chase and Fort Dearborn. Grand Haven became a military town due to its strategic location on the Saint Clair River and because of its access to transportation and resources. The army garrison played an important role in local politics and economy during World War 1 and 2 as well as during the Cold War. In recent years, however, the grandeur of the army garrison has been replaced by smaller units that are less visible but still serve a vital role in society. The history of Army gift history in Grand Haven begins with General Tom Thumb’s arrival here in 1824. Prior to his visit, General Thumb had ordered Colonel John Auldridge to create a small fort at what is now known as Fort Snelling after he discovered that Detroit was under siege by Native Americans. After taking over command from Auldridge, General Thumb soon expanded the fort into a strong Military Post which served as a base for operations against Indian insurgents throughout Michigan and Upper Canada. One of General Thumb’s successors, Colonel James Wilkinson also rebuilt part of this fort which is now known as City Hall building (now used bythe city government). In 1835-36 Major General George Armstrong Custer led his troops through this area conducting combat operations against Canadian forces near present-day Battle Creek National Park before their retreat across Lake Erie. This event is considered one of the largest cavalry engagements ever fought between US Cavalry and Canadian Forces. Following Custer’s death at Little Bighorn Battlefield north of Grand Rapids on July 25th, 1876 his unit’s flag was paraded through downtown Grand Haven followed by burial at nearby Mount Pleasant Cemetery where many soldiers from Company K were buried along with their horses and equipment remnants prior to disposition back at camp near Chicago Illinois later that year according to muster rolls prepared by Captain Charles Waddell who supervised burials for that unit while stationed at Grosse Pointe Park Barracks until January 1st 1865 when it moved back east pursuant to order given by MajGen Starke During this period some members of company K lost their lives fighting or skirmishing alongside regular American Infantry on several occasions such as Near miss engagement with Sioux Indians around White Sands Missile Range New Mexico Territory late summer 1861 about 15 miles SE of Farmington Hills Michigan about 5 Miles West Of escarpment called Red Rock Canyon Utah Territory October 1863 A Lieutenant Commander (later Rear Admiral) Samuel Eliot Morison who commanded USS Olympia moored off shore adjacent to Long Beach Harbor when it ran aground March 14th 1945 while enroute from San Francisco Bay Area California visiting Japanese Naval Facilities Enlisted quarters Harbor View Marina located near old Oakland warehouse District (now DowntownGrandaven) made report regarding conditionof ship October 15th 1946Ship had better be towed out today her name was "Olympia" Army Garrison History section

The Grand Haven, Michigan Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The present-day Grand Haven, Michigan Army National Guard was formed in 1920 as part of the larger federal military response to World War I. The unit saw combat in both World Wars and is responsible for providing security and support to local communities.
Grand Haven is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 69,878 at the 2010 census, making it the 17th-largest city in Michigan and the 9th-largest city in Wayne County. The metropolitan area had a population of 1,086,046 as of July 2015. The first permanent settler in what is now Grand Haven was George Pease who founded Pease's Harbor on November 3, 1813 while he and his family were on their way to load supplies onto an ocean voyage. He named the harbor after him and his son Augustus who had preceded him on the trip from Boston. The first town in what is now Grand Haven was called "Hannibal" because there was a large Indian encampment near present day downtown which sat on high ground next to Bennett Island until 1824 when it was moved to what is now Port Huron following American settlement of that region during the War for Independence. In 1825/26 a group of Methodist ministers met at First Baptist Church under Reverend John Greenleaf Whipple to discuss starting a church here; they organized as First Methodist Episcopal Church with five members - three men and two women - meeting monthly at Greenleaf's house from January 25 through May 8th according to one account . Reverend Whipple also served as pastor for nine months before taking retirement due to ill health in 1830/31; Revivals took hold throughout much of Great Lakes colonies during this time so by October 1830 all but one outpost (Grand Rapids) had joined issue leading hastening growth of cities along then developing Lake Superior corridor including Grand Haven….. In 1835 James Prentice built a sawmill on Thompsons Point just east of present day Main Street; this became known as Post Road Mill Site #1 due to its location (). By 1840 more than 100 businesses had located here – many small mills servicing local farmers such as flour, cheese, lumber, paper products etc.; several stores including Htaylor & Company (later Wm Taylor), Stephenson Hardware (now Zaloga Hardware), L&L Paper Merchants (now Grosse Pointe Farms Paper merchants), Cargill Meat Market (), Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford’s Dearborn Warehouse (), Dodge Manufacturing Company., Jellico Glass Works (). By 1850 over 500 residents lived and worked in these areas with over 150 businesses.; however most development occurred outside central business district where accomplished Streets: Clinton Avenue (present day US Highway 11), Washington Boulevard (), Waterfront Drive (); two blocks south west corner became home to People’s Bank building occupied by Masonic Lodge No. 518 beginning early 1800s followed by Aiken Drug Store () opened 1865 soon followed by Griggs Hotel 1870 soon becoming tallest structure west side until destroyed by fire 1895 misspelled “Griggs” ; One block north east corner became home to Jarvis Drug Store 1886 open same year graced with clock tower 1893 also destroyed 1916 In 1855 Holland Drainage Canal completed linking Ottawa River with Lake Erie completing land trade between Great Lakes colonies; this increased shipping activity along lake providing new opportunities for entrepreneurs ..... With rapidly growing population came rapid growth rates associated with industrial revolution – factories opening up every 10 years or so causing typical village Zip codes such as 63401 (#3rd among largest U S cities) only began appearing around 1860.. In 1861 establishment of school district resulted in limited space being available for schools within central business district creatinginderisively nicknamed "Greenwich Village". Eventuallyvillages spread out into periphery throughout southeast quarter containing modern shopping malls:/ / earliest examples are:(Old Town) Sandwich(1861), Harbor City(1868), West Side(1872)), East Side(1902)). Unfortunately central business district experienced various declines beginning about 1930 until demolition initiated by City Council - resulting today in grandstand-like view from riverbanks

Grand Haven was a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, founded in 1824 by German immigrants. The town has been located within Grand Rapids since 1836, and became the city of Grand Haven in 1898. The population of the city was 3,715 as of 2019. Grand Haven is home to several significant museums including the Holland Family Museum, the Mackinac Center for Humanities and Arts, and the Eastern Michigan University School of Business Administration. In addition, Grand Haven is also home to two high-tech companies - Intel Core Technologies and AMD Ryzen Technology Labs - as well as a number of small businesses and restaurants. The history of Grand Haven began with its founding on November 5th, 1824 by German immigrants who had come to fill an open position at what was then called "The Western Portage." At that time, it was part of Huron County and was bordered by Ionia County on one side and Lake Superior on the other. The land for which Grand Haven sits today wasn't surveyed until after the war between Great Britain and America ended in 1763; however, there were early plans to make this strategic location a port for goods coming down from Canada into Michigan Territory. In 1836, when it became part of Kalamazoo County, Grand Haven voted unanimously to become an independent city under Ohio law due to its proximity to London (then known as Detroit). However, despite its vote in favor (and being surrounded by Ontario County), no action was taken by either government about making it an incorporated city Limits because it lacked proper streets or water supplies (the first municipally owned water system in America). In fact, at first only men could buy property within City limits; women could not purchase land until 1865 when voting rights were given to all citizens regardless of sex. It wasn’t until 1888 when Mayor John Wickersham convinced State Senator Augustus Kelley that incorporation would be beneficial both financially and constitutionally due to increasing violence rates within local gangs which were frequently disrupting public life with their criminal activity: “It is but reasonable that such organized gangs should have their own police force so deterrently opposed thereto” As a result City Council passed an act authorizing incorporation on December 8th 1888 with Mayor Wickersham presiding over proceedings from his office atop City Hall building (today's Washtenaw Community College). On June 1st 1897 City Charter Amendment No.1 repealed Township Act No 2 which granted township status quo ante upon passage by both chambers without debate – effectively ending township governance within City Limits once again following years worth legal maneuvering culminating in passage – finally giving residents unrestricted access to all property within limits waterfrontwise starting at Gratiot Avenue northward… Aided materially by donations from many local business owners including George Nye & Sons hardware store proprietors…) Three years later during Mayor Wickersham's termlimited term he lost re-election bid against incumbent Joseph Jablonski but still retained power pursuant To Charter Amendment No 2 effective immediately thereafter setting up new mayoral election rules which allowed any citizen over 21 years old male or female may run unopposed provided they resided/held real estate inside boundaries defined prior thereto…. Finally elections were held on November 3rd 1902 resulting in mayor Jablonski garnering 54% majority over challenger Arthur Dunn with voters electing him unopposed….. After World War I veteran Burt Peddle purchased most remaining parcels adjacent downtowns area now occupied by FirstMerit Bank building lot east side west side between Washtenaw Avenue & Gratiot Avenue becoming known as Peddles Corner…… Continued growth led downtown expansion along Gratiot Ave., originally built outwards towards Washtenaw River through lots now occupied mostly by Midtown Hospital expansion………….. When current zoning ordinances were put into place following fire outbreaks caused primarily through industrial dereliction (& subsequent Clean Water Act infractions) Limit development reverted back towards original architecture leading many properties near river closed off……………………………… Nowadays nearly all downtown core functions are managed separately thru various agencies………………………… Downtown redevelopment efforts have resulted inOVER $100 MILLIONINGaddedtotheGrandHaven economy since 2000
