Kapp bought a farm near Garden City and began growing coffee. By 1865, he had built a large plantation that produced 150 sacks of raw beans per day. In 1903, Kapp's son Julius founded what is now known as The Julius Corp., which became one of the largest smallbatch coffee roasters in America. Today, The Julius Corp.'s operations are headquartered in Garden City and its products are available throughout Ohio and Indiana. The early days of small batch coffee were difficult: Many farmers did not have electricity or plumbing at this time so water was used to roast beans instead ofBrewing equipment like Coffeemakers . Garden City, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on Grand River east of Saginaw in Midland County. At the 2010 census, its population was 21,046. Garden City is the county seat of Midland County and home to the University of Michigan Bentley School of Business and Law. The first settlement in what is now Garden City was founded by John Prentice in 1824 as a summer resort on the banks of the Grand River. The original town name may have been derived from "garden," meaning "to keep clean." In 1835, Garden City became part of Washtenaw County when it was organized from parts of Kent and Shiawassee counties. Until World War II, Garden City served as an important military base for both Allied forces during World War II and for aircraft manufacturers during the Cold War era. After World War II ended, production at nearby airplane manufacturer Wayne State University stopped while other industries took over; however, Wayne State reopened in 2003 after being closed for eight years due to financial problems caused by community decline and neglect. Today's economy relies mainly on agriculture although there are some small businesses involved in processing various types of products including plastics and rubber products. The city has had two mayors: Harry Calkins (1927-29), who also served as Mayor pro tempore; and Wm Hite (1949-51). In 1949 then-mayor Harry Calkins successfully lobbied to become one of only three cities nationwide to be granted a charter by Governor Norris which made him mayor facto instead of having to run for election every four years like most local governments were required to do under state law at that time. This innovation helped make Garden City one of the most vibrant cities in America with an active downtown scene alongside wide sidewalks throughout each ward like many other major American cities during that period such as New York City or Washington D.C.. However following passage of the Local Government Reform Act 1990 which changed many municipal government rules without changing how elections were conducted within Municipal corporations such as those existing within Garden City's city limits since they were not amended by that act along with similar changes elsewhere within Michigan,-Calkins resigned effective December 1st 1991 effective immediately upon becoming mayor pro tempore once again through legislation noted above - effectively leaving office until March 3rd 1993 when he was succeeded by his lieutenant governor designate Jerald Lehman who held office until January 1st 1994 when Lehman left office again via gubernatorial order cited supra.- thus ending more than 50 years continuous mayoral rule uninterrupted within any municipality situated wholly or partly within Michigan's borders excluding Ann Arbor where an experiment begun back in 1911 pursuant to state statute known as "Mayor Pro Tem" status quo continued unchanged up through 2013 even though Ann Arbor has elected its own mayor since then--a situation unique among all municipalities located entirelywithinMICHIGANORDER despite this fact numerous times previouslyAnnArbor has appointed its own official 'Mayor'--an appointment not subject to recall or referendum unlike other elected officials situated whollywithinMICHIGANORDER
The city of Garden City, Michigan was founded in 1875 by John S. Green and Cyrus Vance. The city was named for the garden district of London which had been visited by Green and Vance while on a business trip to that country. The first houses in Garden City were built near where the Detroit-Windsor Expressway now intersects State Highway 7.
