Garden City, Michigan is a small town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, about twenty miles north of Lansing. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. Garden City is the only incorporated community in and around Lansing. It has a long history dating back to 1836 when Isaac Clapp organized a group of pioneers who set up camp on what is now Old National Road near today's Springbrook Park. The early residents of Garden City were farmers and their families who came from eastern New York and Pennsylvania. Many of these settlers arrived during the early 1800s when land in this area was still available for purchase as part of Indian reservations. By 1836, most of these settlers had already made their homes in central Lansing and east-central Wayne County (now Muskegon Heights). In 1868, Pattern Mather became one of the first merchants to open an store in Garden City. This business was followed by others such as Ransom & Co., Jno. Pugh's Grocery, Wm. Hinkle & Sons Clothing Store, A&W Brewery, Fenton Brothers Grain Exchange (later Flint Mercantile Exchange), Davenport Brewing Company and many more over time. During World War II many local businesses closed due to wartime shortages; however, some managed to stay open including: Power Engineering Works (now GEICO), Empire Chevrolet/Jeep dealership(now Land Rover dealer), Ashley Tire and Rubber Co., Macdonald Canning factory (later PepsiCo) and more! At one point there were over 100 businesses operating within just a five-mile radius of Garden City! In recent years much decline has taken place with few local businesses remaining open since so many have relocated or closed down due to economic troubles or other reasons such as market saturation or competition from neighboring towns which have larger populations and economies. However there are some exceptions such as: Ford Motor Company which built its Rouge plant in nearby Dearborn while also maintaining an operations center here; United States Papergoods which continues production here until present day at their former site adjacent to East High School;and several restaurants/bars scattered throughout town that continue operations despite difficult times like Theaters West Lounge which went out OF BUSINESS but fortunately reopened later after receiving support from citizens; Anna's Pizza restaurant which successfully kept going even though it wasn't close to having any overhead funds left over from previous ownership before closing last year after thirty years in business - all without any prompting from the management!
