The Garden City National Guard was organized on November 3, 1917. The first Cavalry troopers came from the city of Detroit, Michigan and were called to duty in World War I. In 1919, the Guard was renamed the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). On October 1, 1920, the ROTC program became a part of the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. On July 2, 1924, Garden City's National Guard detachment was placed under command of the 9th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Knox in Kentucky. On January 10, 1930, Garden City's detachment was redesignated as a unit of the Canal Zone Army National Guard Bureau. On February 15th both detachments were re-designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HC), 10th Mountain Division Reserve Officer Training Corps (10MILITARY ACADEMY HQ/10DNTC). The 10MILITARY ACADEMY HQ/10DNTC activated on May 16th for training purposes at Ft Polk Louisiana then redeployed to Alamogordo New Mexico on August 5th where it remained until December 1945 when it returned to Garden City MI with headquarters company being attached to 4th Infantry Regiment stationed there from 1946-1948. In 1951 HQ/HCactivated as corps artillery battalion located at nearby Saginaw Arsenal and also served in Korea before returning home in 1952 and disbanding there effective June 30th having served an abbreviated tour there during that time; however all units ultimately disbanded back at HQ/HClocation by order dated September 30TH which left Garden City with just one unit active out of its original six due toalion previously inactive military service herein since 1917!

In 1933, Congress created the Garden City Reserve Company to serve in Federal District Courts located in Detroit. membership increased to include all residents of Wayne County and neighboring counties by 1935. On October 15, 1935, Garden City Reserve Company merged with Local 2227 of Detroit National Guardsmen to form local 9356 of Garden City National Guard. The original name for local 9356 was "Garden City Volunteer Fire Department." In 1940, statehood granted to Michigan made Garden City a city within state boundaries and changed its name to Garden City national guard unit #2. On November 10, 1945 local 9356 activated for service as part of United States armed forces in World War II when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor which resulted in many people being drafted into military service at that time. The 3rd Infantry Regiment reactivated on December 12th 1945 and fought in Okinawa against Japanese forces before withdrawing on April 6th 1946. As a result of World War II Service members received various decorations such as Bronze Star Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster) and Purple Heart recipients were honored with Special award citations such as “For conspicuous gallantry while participating in action against enemy troops” or “For extraordinary heroism while serving with distinction with your battalion”
