The Garden City Coast Guard Station was established on September 15, 1942 by the City of Garden City and the Township of East Troy. The station served as a local center for training new Coast Guardsmen and operated as an auxiliary unit to the Michigan State Police. In 1971, the Coast Guard Station was closed due to budget cuts. However, it reopened in 1973 as a full-time stop for manpower shortages with the help of private donations. In 1984, the station became known as "Garden City's" first ever gift shop when it opened at its current location. Today, Garden City's Coast Guard Station is one of only a few coast guard stations in America that still offers gift store services.
