The Garden City Legion of Honor was activated on January 20, 1915 and the first members were inducted into the organization on February 1, 1915. The legion was originally called the "Garden City Volunteer Infantry Regiment" but changed its name to the "Garden City Legion of Honor" on October 15, 1916. The legion was disbanded on December 12, 1918. The Garden City Legion of Honor was reactivated on December 12, 1918 and initially consisted of only men from Garden City. However, in 1919 the legion grew to include women as well as men. On May 8, 1927 the garden city legion merged with other local organizations including the Detroit chapter of the American Red Cross and became known as the Detroit Gardener's League of Honor.
Garden City, Michigan is a small town in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,544 at the 2010 census. Garden City was founded in 1879 by James W. Gardner and his wife Catharine as a small farming community on the north side of the Kawkawa River. The town grew rapidly after it was designated as a stop on the Grand Trunk Railway in 1887, and became an important transportation center for the area before becoming an agricultural center in the late 19th century. The town's economy changed again in the early 21st century when it become known for its manufacturing sector, which includes products related to car care and home automation technology. Garden City is located about halfway between Lansing and Detroit on U.S. Highway 22 east of I-94. It has a rough surface with few streets that are straight or well-maintained. The only major shopping street is Main Street which runs east-west through the heart of Garden City and contains several local businesses including two grocery stores, four pharmacies, three liquor stores, one bank, two movie theaters, one golf course, and one arena/gelateria complex. The original growth of Garden City was due to its location on top of rich silver mining country which led to development in other industries such as agriculture (cheese), lumber (the first post office had doors made from pine logs), automobiles (the first dealership happened here), engineering (number one customer for local machine shops), papermaking (the first company built here) and construction (a number of buildings still stand today). Today there are many businesses that have been around since Gardener's day like Oneida Glass Company which manufactures windows throughout North America; United Can Manufacturing Corporation which makes canning jars and lids; Hackberry Paper Products Inc., makers of artificial turf; American Weighing & Testing Services - now Accurate Weighting Solutions - who provide weights for items like cars both big and small; Home Depot - who built their first store here back before they moved into their current Headquarters building across from Sears Tower downtown - this building also housed their original Distribution Center where they distributed items all over downtown Lansing; Ingersoll Rand Plastics manufacturer until 1985 when they consolidated with Litton Industries headquartered just downriver inWarren Township In recent years much attention has been paid to Garden City's history by various organizations both governmental and non-governmental such as: "Michigan History: A Comprehensive Guide" published by Michiganders Heritage Foundation; "Gardener’s Town: Its Origins And Legacy" written by Katharine Gardner herself available online at www2.mihistorylink1 .com/~mgardnerstown/index2html Additionally there have been numerous exhibitions hosted throughout Michigan featuring artifacts from Garden City dating back to 1879 such as "The Gilded Age Of Farming In Michigan" held at Eastern Michigan University Museum March 15 – April 3 2016 followed up by another similar event soon afterwards entitled "Michigan Towns From An Early Stage" held at Saginaw Valley State College November 17 – December 2 2016 Finally most recently “From Small beginnings to great things: An oral history Of Gardener’s Town” presented to students at Saginaw Valley State College January 10 – 12 2017 This last presentation looks at how James Gardner Sr.'s business ventures influenced later generations including Katharine Gardner herself

Garden City, Michigan was founded in 1867 by John S. Richardson and his wife, Catharine Augusta. The town was named for the large garden they had acquired near the present-day intersection of Gratiot and Washtenaw Streets. The Richardson's were among the first settlers in what is now Garden City; their home still stands today on West Washtenaw Street. The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its connections to the Cadillac Automotive Company and other industrialists in the region. In 1916, Garden City became an official municipal district within Wayne County; it remained so until its dissolution in 1973. During its time as a municipality, Garden City experienced rapid growth rate which helped spur economic development around its core neighborhood. By 1930, Garden City had reached a population of 23,000 people and was one of the largest cities in Michigan. However, during World War II both Garden City and Wayne County struggled with wartime restrictions on commerce which led to a decline in business activity and population during the war years. However, following World War II there began a new era of growth for Garden City as businesses reopened and residents returned to their homes; by 1971, when it formally became an independent municipality again, GardenCity had reached an estimated population of 381
On May 4, 1871, Garden City was incorporated as a town in Wayne County, Michigan. The population of Garden City increased rapidly following the California Gold Rush and the great American Civil War. In 1872, the first post office was established in Garden City. In 1902, Garden City became a city when it seceded from Wayne County and merged with neighboring cities of Holland and Battle Creek. Garden City's main industry during its early years was agriculture; however, by 1910 there were several small businesses that had developed in the city. The city experienced rapid growth during World War I due to its proximity to major military installations. Postwar prosperity followed as various businesses opened up around the city including some that remain today such as Ford Motor Company and PepsiCo (now Coca-Cola). Garden City also saw growth in residential development after World War II as many people moved into the area for new opportunities postwar. The population has continued to grow over recent decades with an increase in both single-family homes and multifamily dwellings.
