Fraser, Michigan was founded in 1834 by John Fraser and his family. The town was named after Captain James Fraser who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie. The city grew up around the flour mills that were built in the early 1800s. In 1907, the Fraser mill closed down and most of the town disappeared. However, a few buildings remain such as the old school house and post office which are now used as apartments. In 1971, John Fraser's grandson, Robert L. Fraser Jr., donated land to start an historical museum in Fraser that is still running today. The museum has collections on local history, American history, and Michigander culture. In 1984, they opened a restaurant called "The Glen" which is still open today. It features traditional British cuisine with a focus on Scottish Stewart Weidenfeller whisky drinks such as Campbell soup or tatties (a type of potato). The city of Fraser had a population of about 2500 people when it was founded in 1834 but it only grew to about 6000 people by 1970. Despite this growth, there have been no major changes to its downtown core since then apart from some renovation work done in 2004-2005 which added new restaurants and shops to the district including an outdoor market area for local farmers to sell their produce directly to consumers.
