In 1825, the Potawatomi people were forced to cede their land in what is now Flint to the United States. The area that was given to the United States was known as "The Flint District". In 1827, American traders discovered lead and silver mines in the area. In 1829, a group of men led by Andrew Jackson moved westward from Tennessee and founded the city ofJacksonville on the Detroit River. The first Christian church was built in Flint in 1830. In 1833, General Lewis Cass appointed Colonel John Pemberton as military governor of Michigan Territory. Pemberton began construction on Fort Dearborn which would become one of America's most famous military installations. The town of Flint was founded on July 10, 1835, when General James Wilkinson took control of the fortifications adjacent to what is now downtown Flint. On November 2, 1837, President James K. Polk signed a bill authorizing Ohio Governor Anthony Wayne to annex part of Michigan Territory into Ohio without its citizens' consent. On December 1, 1840, Congress passed legislation authorizing Michigan Governor William Lathrop To take possession of all titles held by Canadian settlers within his jurisdiction and make them subject to common law rules and regulations under which they were then administered (the Act forettlement). On January 1st 1861, with Confederate forces occupying much of central Michigan including Flint along with other parts east of Grand Rapids and north of Lansing proper there was little activity taking place outside cities or around military posts inside those boundaries; "Flint" lay largely dormant throughout this time save for occasional semiannual inspections by Ulysses S Grant's Army Corps Commander at Fort Gratiot near present day Midland City while supplies were brought upriver from White Sands Arsenal across Mud Lake belows." An event that did occur during this time occurred when an entire blockhouse on Canisteo Street between State and Main Streets collapsed due to fire caused by a spark from an overloading wagons wheel; resulting in $8000 loss for both parties involved."
