The Flint Naval Shipyard, now the Flint Maritime Heritage Museum, was founded in 1892. The first ship built there was a tugboat, HMCS Alma. In 1903, the Navy purchased two vessels from the Rainbow Steamship Company: USS Huron (AO-1) and USS Michigan (BB-8). The ships were used to construct the battleship Detroit and the destroyer Cleveland. In 1907, HMS Victory was launched from the shipyard as part of ceremonies for World War I. She served as flagship of Cruiser Squadron 10 during that conflict. After World War I, USS Michigan became a floating training base for naval aviators in nearby Great Lakes area until she was decommissioned in 1946. TheUSS Huron also served as a training vessel for Naval Aviator squadron 11 from 1945 to 1948. In 1951, the US Congress passed laws authorizing the construction of three nuclear submarines at the Flint Naval Shipyard—SSN 727 (LST 922), SSN 728 (LST 923) and SSN 729 (LST 1024)—and directs that all proceeds received by contractor United States Steel Corporation be put into this account “to be applied directly to purposes aforesaid” [1]. This marked an important beginning in naval submarine construction in America; however it would not occur again until 1958 when both LSTs 922 and 923 were lost while on their maiden voyage [2]. In 1971–1972, American Electric Power constructed three power plants at Flint Naval Shipyard using hulls formerly belonging to LSTs 525-536 [3], thus marking America’s first nuclear submarine builder [4]. However these units never went into service because of various problems with them such as corroded electrical cables and fishnets being left over after abandonment [5]. Since its inception at Flint Naval Shipyards in 1892 through 1971–1972, navy gift history has included gifts from more than 50 countries around the world including many which have sent warships or submarines here such as Norway, Japan and China etc., making it one of America’s most significant maritime gift histories. The USS "Navy" was a Submarine Chaser ship of the United States Navy. Constructed at Muskegon, Michigan in 1942 as the USS "Gerald R. Ford" (LHD-5), she was redesignated LHD-5A on 2 July 1946 and served as the flagship for Commander, Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet from 1951 to 1955. She then served as flagship for Commander Naval Forces Europe from 1955 to 1957 before being decommissioned on 30 September 1957 and sold to Nederlandse Haagsche Koperij NV on 15 October 1957.
Flint, Michigan is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the largest city in the Detroit metropolitan area. The population of Flint was 734,824 as of 2018. It is the most populous city in Genesee County and one of the fastest-growing cities in Michigan. The city's nickname is "The City of Lakes." Flint was founded on August 17, 1810 by John Saginaw Indians as an outpost on the Muskegon River to support their war against French forces in what became known as the War for American Independence (1812-14). In 1817, General George Washington appointed Colonel Christopher Kipp to lead an expedition to take control of Flint from the Saginaws. In 1821, Flint was made a town under Indian management and became a major center for fur trade with Canada. On January 24, 1825, Flint was incorporated as a village under State regulation after becoming one of several U.S. Steel towns authorized by Congress during president James Kossuth's administration. In 1840s and 1850s, Flint experienced rapid growth due to its position at the headwaters of both Huron River and Flint Creek; overnight it acquired a reputation as one of America's leading manufacturing centers because it produced steel products such as cannons and railroad ties from wrought iron then making them available worldwide at low prices thanks to patents granted to Alfred Pyle by George Stephenson

Flint, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 37,711 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th-most populous city in Michigan and the 11th-most populous county seat. Flint was founded on what is now abandoned land near Fort Gratiot in 1795 as a strategic location for trade with both British and Native Americans. The settlement grew into a small town before becoming a city in 1817. It experienced an economic boom during World War II as manufacturing plants moved to the area from other parts of Michigan and Ohio. However, following the recession in 2008–09, Flint has seen significant decline since then and its population has fallen below 30,000 for the first time since 2000. Flint’s history began with Native American traders who traveled through this area on their way to find new markets for their goods. The first European settlers arrived here in 1795 when French fur trader Pierre de la Salle explored what is now Flint Township while on his way to establish a trading post at Mackinac Island. Fort Gratiot was established nearby by General Anthony Wayne during this time as part of an effort to secure access to Lake Huron from Native American nations such as the Ottawa people (also known as Wyandots). In 1801, John Purdy built Fort Dearborn just east of present-day downtown Flint; this fort served as an early warning system against Indian raids that were becoming more common throughout Upper Michigan due to increased trade between Indian tribes and white settlers. In 1812, Antoine Lescarbot erected a small fortification called Poste Rouge (Red Post) adjacent to what is today Old Town Square in order to protect traders passing through this region on their way back and forth from Detroit or Ann Arbor overland routes connecting these settlements. This fortification remained active until it was abandoned c1825 after being damaged by fire.* In 1815, Colonel Augustus Willcox erected another small fortification named Poste Blanc (White Post) about one mile west of present-day International Boulevard* at what is today Gratiot Park* due to continued attacks by Indians along that route*. This fortifications remained active until they were abandoned around 1840 due to lack of available resources * *. The earliest permanent settler here came from England via Canada in 1796 when Captain John Stevens landed here with his fleet† after spending several years navigating across open water searching for passage northward into America**. He foundered onshore near modern day Bray Road shortly thereafter but not before transmitting news of English Settlement located elsewhere along Upper Great Lakes **>. A group of sixty men under Captains David Dixon & Isaac Watts landed at Grand rapids Bayou on July 16th† (*), soon afterward calling themselves “the discoverers”† because they had no idea where else they should go next! They founded what would become Flint on August 15th† (*), naming it after Mount Morris – also spelled Michigania – which stands above them atop Muskegon Heights† (*). Here they constructedFort Clark*, later renamed Fort Atkinson* after Major General James Atkinson who had commandeered two ships dispatched by Lord Dunmore†(*). On December 11th†(*), Lieutenant Governor Moses Silliman issued Order No 2 Geo WASHINGTON establishing limits within which each tribal nation could operate concurrent with English Settlement*. As more white settlers arrived here over time including members of Congress represented among them* (*), Order No 3 Geo WASHINGTON dated February 5th 1816 revoked earlier boundaries defining each tribe’s exclusive jurisdiction within certain regions surrounding Lower Mainland*) [*]. In 1800–01 alone*, some 740 people lived permanently or temporarilyin Flixtontown*, most notably Revolutionary War veteran Elijah Clarke who had set up residency there prior thereto* *. By contrast only 25 people lived permanently or temporarilyin Auburn Hills* *. A number similar enclaves were established throughout Upper Peninsula Territory*, eventually resulting In organized villages known respectively as Utica/Harrisonville*/Mackinac City/* . These village communities evolved out OF necessity MOSTLY FROM PROTEST AGAINST ENEMY ACTIVITY BY THE SWEEPING SWAMP CHILDREN OF TIBETAN POPULATION IN UPPER MIAMI COUNTY INCLUDING FLINT WHICH BEGAN AS EARLY AS OCTOBER 1800 . . . WHEN MANY MEN AND WOMEN FOUND THEIR WAY HERE TO HELP WITH THE DEFENSE OF THESE AREAS AGAINST CANADIAN CATTLE DROPPINGS THAT YEAR [C]ARRYING ALLTHE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES INTO THIS COUNTRY [D]URING THE WAR FOR FRONTIERS [E]ITHIN CONTEMPT OF OUR LAWS AND CONDITIONS WE PARTICIPATED[F]. Flint, Michigan was founded in 1824 as a small town on the Flint River. The population of Flint quickly grew due to its location and mineral resources. In 1862, the United States invested in the development of the American Railroad system, which made Flint an important transportation hub. By 1870, Flint had become one of America's leading manufacturing cities. The city experienced significant economic growth during the 1920s and 1930s thanks to advances in cars and trucks, production from aluminum smelters, and industrial growth along the riverfront. However, during World War II, Flint was hit hard by rationing and military efforts; by 1945 most of the city's factories were closed or mothballed. In 1960-1961, following statehood for Michigan, many large companies moved out of Flint after experiencing difficulty getting government permission to expand into new areas within their company limits. After years of struggle and financial woes, Flint finally regained some prosperity through arts and cultural programs in the late 1990s and early 2000s; however overall poverty remains high among its citizens.
