Flint, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the seat of Genesee County. As of 2010, it had a population of 97,362. Flint's name comes from the Flint River and was given to it by General James K. Polk in 1837 as part of his effort to push back British control over the area at the time. The river served as a natural boundary between Indian Territory and what is now Michigan until 1835 when Indiana gained full independence from Great Britain. In January 1847, as part of an agreement with Canada, Flint became part of the new Canadan province of Upper Canada and was renamed Toronto after King George IV's visit to that city in 1846. The first people to live in Flint were members of the Huron tribe who arrived there about 1795 AD from present-day eastern Ontario; they started trading with local tribes and developed agriculture around 1800 BC (the first permanent settler being French trader Antoine Caron). From 1800 until 1861, native village sites dotted around downtown included Saginaw Bay on the east side and Point Defiance on its west side; these villages traded goods with other nearby villages such as Grand Rapids, Michigamie Heights on Lake Huron, Greenville on Thames River upstream from Detroit and Whitefish Bay across Mackinac Island into Georgian Bayou on its north shore. By 1840 most residents within 2 miles (3 km) radius were white settlers; some blacksmiths also set up shop near Cass Corridor Railway Station (now known as Downtown Detroit), selling their services to travelers passing through that area during this period. With World War II looming large attention turned towards aircraft manufacturing facilities across southeastern United States needing skilled labor so GM engaged Bell Laboratories physicists working on ballistic missiles research leading ultimatelyto founding Norris Corporation whose product became world famous called " Norris Plutonium".
